Adjusting max send/receive speed in fax environments with poor line quality or noisy phone lines

Issue description

Consider this procedure if you observe any of the following fax symptoms:

  • Noisy phone lines with a lot of interference.
  • Digital phone lines with poor signal conversion.
  • Phone lines with poor signal strength.
  • Several fax errors on the fax call or transmission log.

Solution

  1. Lower the Max Send/Receive rate to the slowest possible rate of 9600 for testing purposes. See the following instructions for further information.

Did the lower 9600 speed work?

    • If the 9600 bps is successful, increase the speed in increments up to 14.4 kbps.
    • If the 9600 bps is not successful, the phone line quality is beyond what is acceptable for fax transmissions, or there is a fax setup issue, or a different phone line issue exists.
  2. Continue to operate the MFP at 14,400 bps or 14.4 kbps.

  3. Optionally, continue to increase the Max Send/Receive rates until failures reoccur, and then report your results to your phone line service/administrator.

Failure explanation

Higher speeds (33.6 kbps) require better phone line conditions.
