Clicking noise from the Scanner and Blue Screen

Issue description

You may encounter one or all of the following problems with your MFP:

  • A clicking noise coming from the back of the unit between the scanner and the printer.
  • A blue screen on the touch screen; the MFP never comes to a ready state.
  • An 843 error message.

Explanation

The loud noise is caused by the belt on the scan head jumping the gear.

If the issue persists, search for more information related to this issue or contact support for further assistance.

Service action

First: Remove the Glass Slit from the Scanner

StepAction

1

Open the document cover.

2

Remove the two screws (A).

Note:  The screws are of two different lengths; the longer screw goes to the rear and the shorter to the front.

3

Carefully pry up the inner edge.

Notes:

  • Do not use tools that can scratch the glass.
  • Be careful not to touch the underside of the scanner flatbed glass holder.

4

Lift to release the three tabs (B). Pull the plastic up from the right side and extract at a 45 degree angle. This is done to clear the tabs located on the left side of the glass ‘slit’.

Note:  Place the scanner flatbed glass holder assembly on a clean, dry cloth to protect the glass from scratches

Second: Bend the Bracket to Make Sure of Clearance for the Scan Head

StepAction

1

There is a mechanical interference with the scan head from the metal locating bracket. This bracket is located near the home position, to the left side of the flatbed, near the ‘slit’ glass. You might see scratches on the black plastic beveled edge of the scan head (near the arrow in the picture).

2

Move the scan head several inches to the right.

Note:  The picture shows the flatbed glass removed; you are not required to remove this glass.

3

Bend the bracket upwards 1-2 mm, as shown. Move the scan head back and make sure there is clearance.

4

Power on the machine and make sure the error code/symptoms are gone and that the scan head is moving smoothly.

Third: Clean and Reinstall the Glass Slit

  1. Clean the top and bottom of the ‘slit’ glass with window cleaner or IPA.

Note:  Be sure not to leave any debris from the cloth or fingerprints on the glass.

  2. Install the parts in reverse order of removal.
