General Troubleshooting Guide: LDD Discovery and Policy Update Issue

Overview

This article provides some troubleshooting guides and things to check when using Lexmark Document Distributor (LDD) Discovery.

Troubleshooting guidelines and what to check

Guidelines
  1. Compare the Device Security Settings between the Lexmark management console (LMC) and the Lexmark device being discovered by LDD, or with the Lexmark device that will be receiving the latest updates (policies).

Note:
In discovering devices, if the LMC is configured with a password, the device should also be configured. For Lexmark devices released in the year 2016, please refer to the Additional procedure section.

  1. SNMP Community Name should match both LMC and that of the Device that was discovered.

  1. Enable mDNS setting needs to be enabled on the multi-function printer (MFP), which and can be located under Network/Ports > TCPI/IP.

  1. mDNS port should also be checked or opened on the MFP under TCP/IP Port Access.

  1. In addition to the mDNS port, below is a list of ports that need to be opened for LDD to communicate with the MFP properly.

  • 79 TCP Finger
  • 161 UDP SNMP, device discovery
  • 5000 TCP Policy updates, ObjectStore plain text communication
  • 5353 UDP Multicast DNS
  • 6000 UDP Device discovery, ObjectStore communication using XML protocol
  • 6100 UDP Device discovery, policy updates, Lexmark Secure Transport (LST) encrypted data
  • 6110 TCP Device discovery, policy updates, LST authentication and negotiation
  • 9100 TCP Printing, policy updates
  • 9300 UDP Device discovery, NPA protocol UDP communications
  • 9500 TCP NPA protocol TCP communications

Note:
In some locations that are secured, the mDNS is disabled on some MFPs. As a workaround, mDNS can be enabled while discovering devices, then disabled after doing the discovery/policy update.

To discover secured older devices, the Basic Security (Security Menu) needs to be recreated and the menus above should be set with the appropriate security setting.

Additional procedure

For Lexmark devices that were released in the year 2016, use the steps below to create a password for a local account.

StepAction
1

Access the printer's embedded web server (EWS) and navigate to Settings > Security.

2

Add a Local account, then select password and the permission group.

3

Go back to Security > Local Accounts and select Manage Groups/Permissions.

4

Select the group where the local account password was added .

5

Make sure the group has permissions to these items:

  • Create Profiles
  • Remote Management
  • Firmware Updates
  • Apps Configuration

Note:
If the Lexmark management console (LMC) does not have any security set, then Function Access Control (FAC) for the group above needs to be set to No Security. For Lexmark devices released in the year 2016, make sure the Public group has access to all of the FAC.
