Repeated paper jam and 28x' paper jam error message

What you will see

The printer jams paper whenever printing. The issue can occur constantly or intermittently.

The numeric error code displayed is a '28x' error (where 'x' can be any number).

Normally, this type of error indicates a jam in the finisher option. The finisher option is highlighted in yellow in the image below.

Recommended actions

In addition to the numeric error code, the printer will identify a location where to look for the jammed page. Check the area indicated in the error message. To view an image identifying the different areas of the printer, click here.

If you are able to locate and remove the jammed page, try printing again. If you have problems locating the jammed page in the printer, follow the directions in the tables below.

IMPORTANT! If the print job was more than one page long, it will be necessary to locate and remove the other jammed pages before you can continue printing. If you have trouble locating these jammed pages, press the check icon button on the printer. If other pages are jammed in the printer, a new error message and location will now appear. You can use this information to locate the remaining jammed pages, one at a time.

If the jamming continues

If paper continues to jam repeatedly in the printer, check for the following.

  • Confirm that the area indicated in the error is clear of all jammed paper and paper fragments.
  • Make sure the paper/print media is properly loaded into the paper tray, including:
    • Confirm the paper stack does not pass the 'max fill line' indicator on the tray.
    • Confirm that the paper tray is fully pushed in.
    • Confirm the paper support guides on the tray are set in the correct position. The support guides should lightly rest against the paper stack, preventing the stack from shifting while not binding the paper. In addition, the position of the paper guides indicates the printer paper size setting for each tray.
    • Do not mix different sizes or types of paper in the same tray. NOTE: For more detailed tray loading instructions, refer to the printer's User's Guide.
  • Try printing on plain copy paper, if you are not already doing so. Please try this even if the print media you are using has worked in the past. Certain specialty media are more difficult for the printer to feed, and their use can increase the chances of jamming.
  • For additional tips on paper jam prevention, see the 'Avoiding Jams' chapter in the printer's User's Guide.
  • If the jamming continues after all of the above recommendations have been tried, you can attempt to narrow the source of the problem to either the finisher option or to the base printer. Do this by powering off the printer, disconnecting the finisher option cables, and then removing the finisher option. Power on the printer again and then try printing using just the base printer. If using the base printer works fine, you can continue to use the printer this way until a service call can be arranged.
  • If you require additional assistance with this issue, or if the printer will require service to correct the issue, please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service provider. NOTE: When contacting Lexmark Technical Support, or arranging a service call, try to provide as much of the following information as possible:
    • The full numeric error code.
    • The location where the jammed page is located.
    • Is the leading edge of the page damaged, or does it appear to be caught on anything?
    • Is the jammed page crooked?
    • You may be asked to provide information on the paper, such as the manufacturer, brand name, size and weight, hole-punched or perforated.

If the issue persists, search for more information related to this issue or contact support for further assistance.
