849.01 service error

Step

Action

1

Power off the printer.

2

With the printer off, press and hold the 3 and the 6 buttons on the numeric keypad.

3

Power the printer ON again while keeping both of the buttons held down.

4

Release the buttons after the memory count has completed. HINT: This is located in the upper left-hand corner of the LCD.

5

The Diagnostics Menu should now be displayed. Press the down arrow button until PRINTER SETUP is shown and select that. A new list of menu choices will now display.

6

Press the down arrow again until CONFIG ID is shown and select that. Confirm that the Config ID settings match the appropriate values below.

  • - For X782 printer models, the Config ID1 value should be 'FE 50 05 E5'. The Config ID2 value should be 'AA 55 72 F6'.
  • - For X646ef printer models, the Config ID1 value should be 'FF A0 05 A7'. The Config ID2 value should be 'AA 55 70 F4'.
  • - For T64x printer models with an X4600 scanner option connected, please contact Lexmark Technical Support to obtain the correct Configuration ID settings.

If the Config ID settings on the printer do not match the values listed here, change the Config ID value on the printer to match it.

If the Config ID settings on the printer do match the values listed here, press the Back or the Cancel button to exit this and return to the main menu.

7

Locate and select Exit Diagnostics. This will reset the printer and return it to its normal printing mode.

NOTE: If you have problems exiting the Diagnostic menu, you can choose to exit the menu by powering off the printer. Wait 20 seconds, then power it on again.

8

If you changed any of the Config ID values, see if the printer powers up to the 'ready' status correctly. If the 849.01 error does not return, try using the scanner unit.

If the scanner works properly, continue normal use. Pay close attention to the printer over the next few days to see if the error returns.

If the error returns on power up or when using the scanner, continue with the steps below.

Step

Action

1

Power off the printer and the scanner unit.

2

If possible, access the system board within the scanner unit. Find out if a hard drive is installed in the scanner.

NOTE: Accessing the scanner system board will involve some dismantling of the scanner unit. For detailed directions on how to access the scanner system board, please contact Lexmark Technical Support.

If a hard drive unit is installed: The scanner unit is fine. Find out if the scanner unit was recently exchanged as part of a warranty exchange service action. If it was, the customer may have received the incorrect scanner model.

If a scanner unit without a hard drive is replaced with a scanner that does have a hard drive installed, it will create an 849.01 error on the printer. If the scanner unit was recently replaced, please contact Lexmark Technical Support or your next level of support before replacing any parts.

If a hard drive is not installed: Confirm again that the Config ID values on the printer are set correctly. If the printer's Config ID values are set correctly, set up a warranty service action and replace the Scanner PCI Card Assembly (Part number:40X2584).

Note:  This article is based off of a previous article, TE80. Because of all the changes I made, I decided it would be best to make this a new article rather than have TE80 re-translated.

What you will see

The printer displays an 849.01 Service error.

What the error means

An 849.01 error indicates a problem with the scanner unit.

Recommended actions

Power off the printer and the scanner unit. Wait 20 seconds, and then power them on again.

See if the error message returns. If the error does not return, try using the scanner unit.

  • - If the scanner works properly, continue normal use. Pay close attention to the printer over the next few days to see if the error returns.
  • - If the error returns on power up or when using the scanner, contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance.

NOTE: If the error prevents you from using the printer, you may be able to continue using it by disconnecting the scanner unit. This will require you to enter the printer and remove the Scanner PCI Card from the main system board. Have the printer powered off and unplugged before performing this procedure. For information on how to access and remove the scanner card, contact a Lexmark Support Representative or refer to the 'Installing an Option Card' section in the Users Guide.
