E-Mail Transmission Error Codes and Recommendations

Issue Description:

You receive an E-mail Transmission Failure displayed on the printer control panel, followed by a printed Scan Log.

This article shares some of the possible causes for the error codes depicted on the Scan Log.

Not all Lexmark multi-function printers support e-mail authentication. If your printer does not, contact your E-mail Service Provider (ESP) to see other available options. You may have to perform a scan-to-pc if this is the case.

Common "Scan Log" Error Codes:

Connection Failure: <-7>

Connection Error

Incorrect Port

Enter a different port number and test again. Common ports include 465, 587 and 25.

Connection Failure: <-10>

E-mail Server Not Set up.

  1. Validate CAis turned On when it should be turned Off or vice versa.

  2. Username

    entered incorrectly.

  1. Try the opposing setting and test again.

  2. Try both the fullname; e.g.,, and then just the username; e.g., test, and test again.

Connection Failure: <-11>

Cannot resolve server address.

  1. Incorrect SMTP Server Address

  2. Network communication problem

  3. Printer communication problem

  1. Enter the SMTP server address, and test again.

  2. Contact your ISP internet service provider to a identify problem with the wide area network (WAN). Can you access the Web?

  3. Test network-printer communication by opening the printer's web page and printing a page or scanning a document to a PC.

Connection Failure: <-19>

Incorrect Port or SSL/TLS setting

Contact your ESP and verify SSL/TLS and Port combination, and test again.

Connection Failure: <-52>

Error sending to an email connection failure -52 self time certificate.

Validate CA

has been checked

Uncheck the "Validate CA" tickbox.

Access printer's EWS > go to Settings > E-mail/FTP Settings > E-mail Settings > Setup E-mail Server > uncheck Validate CA

Connection Failure <504>

SMTP Server Authentication set to "NTLM"

Unrecognized Authentication Type. Change Authentication to applicable Plain/Login or None.

Connection Failure: <530>

  1. Enable SSL/TLSis turned Off when it's actually required.

  2. SMTP Server Authentication is set to No Authentication Required "None".

  1. Set to Negotiate or Required and test again.

  2. Set Authentication to applicable setting and test again. (Plain/Login, or NTLM).

Authorization failed <534>


Enable your Gmail account's access for less secure apps. To do so:

  1. Go to


  2. Click on

    Account security > Suspicious activity


  3. Click on

    Allowing less secure apps to access your account


  4. Under Access your account, click on Allow less secure apps.

  5. Select

    Turn On


Connection Failure <535>

Username and Password not accepted.

Change Username and Password and test again.

Again, some ESPs requirefull e-mail address ( and others require only the


Userid (hello)

portion of the e-mail address.

Passwords are sensitive to spelling, capitalization, and the use of symbols and characters.

Printer to E-mail Server Communication Flow and E-mail Error Triggers:

The printer initiates communication (Step 1) and closes the connection (Step 16).
