Connecting the printer wirelessly on a Windows 8 operating system

Issue description

This article explains the available options on how to connect the Lexmark MFP or printer wirelessly on a Windows 8 operating system.

Before you begin

Confirm the following settings and conditions before attempting to install and configure your printer on a wireless network.

Note:  If unsure of the following settings, consult with your router/wireless device manufacturer or the person who set up your wireless network.

  1. Obtain your required wireless router/AP Wi-Fi settings:

    • Service Set Identifier (SSID) or most commonly known as Network Name.
    • Security type (e.g., WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.)
    • Network key, passphrase, orpassword
  2. Test communication with your router.

  3. If your computer is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable, make sure that other wireless clients can communicate over the wireless network.

  4. Print a network settings page – Optional, but recommended if the printer is already turned on and loaded with paper.

Solution

If the printer is already connected to the network before Windows 8 installation or setup, then print the network setup page or manually check for the IP address from the control panel.

If the printer is not yet connected to the network before Windows 8 installation or setup, then see the following Wireless Setup options below.

Note:  Identify Windows 8 or Windows RT compatibility with your device. Click here for a compatibility list.

Lexmark Wireless Setup Utility (WSU) or Wireless Setup Assistant (WSA)

Note:  When using WSU or WSA, a USB configuration cable is required.

  1. Turn on your printer and select Wireless connection when prompted.

  2. Select Guided Setup as your Wireless Configuration Path and click Yes.

  3. Select Continue.

  4. Connect the installation (USB) cable between PC and printer, and click Continue.

  5. Select your network name (SSID) and click Continue.

  6. Confirm how the software processes your Network Key.

    • If you’d like the software to determine the key, select Yes.
    • If you’d like to enter the Network key manually, select No, and enter the password.
  7. Remove the installation cable. If the procedure was successful, a networks settings page prints automatically.
