This article describes how to use your printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) to join your wireless network; i.e., WLAN.

|Host computer (PC) is not in close proximity to the printer.||
NOTE: For WSU, you will still need to verify the installation of the driver, creation of the port, and make sure your printer's IP address matches what is listed under Printer Properties > Ports. You may need the installation CD or a downloaded version of the driver from the Lexmark support siteto complete the setup process.
This article does not include walk-thru instructions for the installation of the driver.

Exact entry of all settings is required to join your wireless network.
WLAN – Wireless Local Area Network
See your access point's configuration utility or embedded web server for these values:
- Network Name: SSID
- Radio Mode: 802.11 b/g; 802.11 b/gn
- Security Mode: None(Disabled); WPA; WPA2; 802.1x
- Passphrase, or any advanced 802.1x (Radius) values, if applicable
|Printer's IP address||This is required to open the printer's Web page or embedded Web server (EWS).|
For Laser printers:
Print the Network Setup Page: i.e., from the control panel, press the Menu button > select Reports, and then select Network SetupPage.
Or, locate IP address in the upper left corner of the printer screen or LCD.
Or, navigate to TCP/IP Settings. Press Menu > Settings > Standard Network > Standard Network Setup > TCP/IP > IP Address.
For All-In-One Inkjet printers:
Print the Network Setup Page; i.e., from the control panel, press or touch the Menu button, navigate to Network Setup, and thenPrint Setup Page.
Or, view the IP address on the device. From the control panel, press or touch the Menu button, navigate to Network Setup, and thenTCP/IP > IPv4 Setup.
Or, view the IP address on the device by pressing the network connection symbol.
Note: This applies to certain touch screen printers only.

Some printers did not initially include Apple AirPrint support and required a firmware update to establish this feature enhancement. Other printers do not support AirPrint due to memory resources.
Look for the presence of AirPrint listed under Settings > Network/Ports, and if necessary, return to Lexmark support siteto locate available firmware update information on your printer's product page.

Procedure: Joining to WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)

Step 1 is completed and ALL wireless security settings are properly configured but the printer is not communicating...

Configure printer with your Wi-Fi security configuration settings.
Precise entry of these values is critical as they must be identical to those found on your router's AP or a nearby wireless PC.

Enter the printer's IP Address into the Web address field, and then press Enter.
Note: If using a proxy server, you may need to temporarily disable it to load the Web page correctly.

Change the Network Mode to Infrastructure only if Ad hoc is selected.
Note: This setting should not have to be changed since the default setting is Infrastructure.
Enter your router's (AP) SSID (Network name) from your wireless router.
Factory setting: print server ######
Enter Network Compatibility mode:
Choices before EC6-level firmware:
- 802.11 n
- 802.11 b/g/n (most common)
EC6 and later:
- 802.11 b/g
- 802.11 n
- 802.11 b/g/n
- 802.11 a/b/g/n (5 or 2.4GHz)
- 802.11 a/n (5GHz)
If you do not see a/b/g/n or a/n modes then you will need to update your printer's firmware to EC6, i.e., LW63.##.P638, or later. See How to Check, Download, and Update with the Latest Lexmark Printer Firmware.
Also, if Lexmark Mobile Print was previously enabled, then it must first be xref_PU78360_xref should the 5GHz mode be chosen.
Enter your router's (AP) Wireless Security Mode:
Factory setting: Disabled
- WPA2-PSK (Most common)
- 802.1x – Radius (Most secure)
Selectyour router's (AP) WPA-PSK Encryption Mode:
- TKIP (WPA setting)
- Auto (Safe setting)
- AES (Most common – WPA2)
Enter your router's PreShared Key/Passphrase*.
Press Submit.||You will see Submitting Selection.|
|12||Disconnect the Ethernet cable and then |
power cycle (i.e., turn the printer OFF, wait several seconds, and then turn it back ON).
|An Ethernet 802.11b/g/n network settings page should print.|
TIP! Common mistakes include misspelled words and not recognizing spaces, underscores, symbols, or the capitalization of certain letters.
Look at your Ethernet 802.11b/g/n network settings page.
|Status: Not Connected||Locate the Trouble Code near the bottom of the page or on the second sheet, i.e., "Can't Find Wireless Network".||See Trouble Code suggestions below.|
|Status: Connected ||The printer should be successfully connected to your WLAN. |
Attempt to print, scan, or observe that you are still able to access the embedded web server.
I did not receive a Ethernet 802.11 b/g/n page or a Ethernet 10/100/1000 page prints showing Status: Not Connected
|You didn't follow Step 12 above; or, somehow, the Active Network Card is set to Std. Network.||Disconnect the Ethernet cable or see Select Active Network Card immediatelybelow.|

Procedure: Select Active Network Card to Auto or Network 1
If Active Network Card set to the Std. Network, you will not be able to connect to the wireless network.
To do this from the printer's web page:
To do this from the printer's control panel:

Select required Auto or Network Card 1.

Wait! The printer will have to reset or rebooted before it can attempt to join the active wireless network.
RESET NOTE: The printer has to reset because the printer cannot run concurrent wireless and wired network card options. This allows the printer to detect the newly activated network card option.
NIC – Network Interface Card
Active network card behavior
|If you select...||Then...||Good to know|
Automatic switching from STD NETWORK to NETWORK CARD 1 if the printer recognizes the wireless print server has been configured and you have disconnected the network cable.
Note: It will show connected on the setup sheet only if the printer can complete client-to-AP authentication and association.
- Ethernet or wired connections takeprecedence over wireless connections. This setting will only detect a wireless connection if the network cable is removed from the device (printer).
- Wireless configuration control panel menu options are removed when a wired Ethernet connection is present.
- Configuring wireless settings using the Control panel will not be possible if the printer senses an active Ethernet connection.
- Remove the cable to restore Wireless Menu options.
Network Card 1
- You force Ethernet 802.11 b/g/n (MarkNet N8150, N8250, N8350 or N8352 wireless print server).
- You disable Ethernet 10/100/1000 (Internal network adapter [INA, NIC]).
- If radio signal is lost, then plugging a network cable into the Ethernet port will not recover your network connection.
- This setting forces the device to use the wireless option. Use only if you know you are not going to revert back to a wired Ethernet connection.
- You will see Ethernet 802.11 a/b/g/n at the top of the Network Setup Page.
|Std. Network |
- You force Ethernet 10/100/1000 (Internal network adapter (INA, NIC).
- You disable Ethernet 802.11b/g/n (MarkNet N8150, N8250, N8350 or N8352 wireless print server).
- Disconnecting the Ethernet cable will not establish a Wi-Fi connection.
- You will see Ethernet 10/100/1000 at the top of Network Setup Page.

Trouble Codes and Suggestions
|Trouble code explanation||Possible cause and corrective actions|
|Cannot associate with wireless networkSignal Quality – (Unacceptable)|
* See router or access point (AP) documentation.
- Improper configuration settings:
- Ad hoc selected
- Incorrect entry of WEP key or WPA (2) passphrase
- Incorrect selection of proper security type (WEP, WPA, WPA2)
- Improper encryption cipher (WPA2: TKIP or AES)HINT! WPA uses TKIP/PSK and WPA2 adds AES.
- Network Compatibility mode setting mismatch with network; i.e., 802.11 a/b/g/n
- Improper channel width setting vs; i.e., 20, 40, 20/40MHz
- MAC (media access control) filtering or other security measures:
- Router MAC filtering either allows or prevents clients or wireless NICs to associate on the network. This router feature requires the entry of the printer's NIC MAC address to grant access to the router (AP).
- Work virtual private network (VPN)* connection is enabled while configuring or setting up device.
- Virtual Private Network (VPN) The only way around this is VPN tunneling. If this is not an option, disconnect from your VPN to ensure successful configuration and communication with the printer.
- Firewalls* on the router may prevent association with the router.
- DHCP turned OFF* on router. This prevents IP address assignment and prevents the printer from joining the network.
- 5GHz only* setting on the router if you do not have the latest EC6.0 printer firmware.
- Radio turned OFF*on router.
- Unsupported Proprietary Speeds and Protocol setting; Lexmark devices strictly adhere to IEEE 802.11 g/b/n 2.4GHz standard.
|Access point is not using WPA|
- WPA security type was selected and configured on the printer NIC but the AP does not have any WPA information elements in its beacons. Make sure the router is not configured for some other type of security.
- Or the AP with the target SSID is advertising WPA security with WPA information elements in its beacons, but the printer's wireless NIC (adapter) is not configured for WPA.
|Signal strength too weak |
- The network name or SSID is in the wireless setup utility (WSU/WSAMac) site survey results, but its signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio is < 10dB, which the Lexmark wireless adapter deems unacceptable.
Note:The setting page does not list SNR on our network settings sheet, but it may list signal strength, which accounts for overall signal quality. SNR = RF signal power relative to power of noise in the environment; e.g., 43db SNR is better than 37db SNR.
- Suggested actions include:
- Antenna adjustment; booster (gain) antennas if router supports it
- Range extenders (repeaters)
- Reposition AP or printer
- Change AP channel
- Remove obstructions. See the router documentation or contact the router manufacturer's technical support for further suggestions.
|Can't find wireless network||
Possible causes and suggestions include:|
- Invisibility Status (enabled) or Broadcast SSID (disabled) may be configured on your router. This will prevent a successful site survey by the wireless configuration utility.
- The target network name or SSID no longer exists.
Confirm your AP's network name or SSID. See the router documentation or configuration web or software utility.
- The target network name or AP is completely out of range.
|Signal strength too strong|
- The target SSID in the wireless configuration utility site survey is too strong or greater than –10dB.
- This explanation requires a greater understanding of radio frequency behavior, but it should be known that having the printer too close to the router can cause receiver trouble.

Other configuration methods available
- Consider configuring wireless settings from the printer's How to Configure Wireless Settings for the MarkNet N8350 and MarkNet N8352 via Printer Control Panel, if any of these conditions apply:
- Your printer is not connected to a wired Ethernet network.
- The printer has a touch screen.
- Consider the following options if you are using xref_SO6286_xref:
- Personal Identification Number (PIN) or Push Button Configuration (PBC)
Note: PBC requires turning on WPS Autodetection, found under Setup > Network/Ports > Network (#) > Network # Setup > Enable/Disable WPS Autodetection
- Initiate WPS from router's configuration web page, a button on the wireless router/AP, or the printer’s PIN or PBC menu option.
Please reference your router's documentation or router's technical support services to find out more about this capability.
- Bonjour configuration on Apple Macintosh or AirPrint of your printer supports it.
- The Wireless Setup Utility for MS31x Series, MS41x Series, CS31x, and all All-In-One Inkjet models users. This requires installing the driver package located on CD, or downloaded version from Lexmark support site.
