How to Check IP Parameters (IP Address, Subnet, Netmask, Router Gateway) in Mac OS X and Windows Operating System Environments

Overview

Performing the procedures in this article will reveal your computer's IP parameters. Relevant settings include:

  • IP address
  • Subnet (Netmask)
  • Gatewayaddress (also known as the router's or access point's (AP) IP address, which is useful for opening the router's web page or embedded web server (EWS) page.

IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION TEST! Once you have obtained the gateway address, type this address into your Web browsers URL field to open your router's EWS; e.g., 192.168.0.1*entered as http://192.168.0.1. xref_HO3086_xref for another example.


NOTE:
* This value will vary by router manufacturer.

Macintosh

Checking settings in Macintosh OS X

From the Dock, click on the System Preferences icon. (See Image 1)

For Macintosh OS 10.3.x, 10.4.x, and 10.5.x, click

Alternatively, you may click on the Apple icon, and then System Preferences. (See Image 2)

Click on the Network adapter used; e.g., Airport, Ethernet, etc. Note the values of the settings mentioned above.


Note:
Alternatively, you may click on Advanced. Under the TCP IP tab, you will see the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router or Gateway values.

Alternative procedures in Macintosh OS X

  1. From the Dock, click on the Terminal icon.

  2. Go to Macintosh HD and then open Utilities.

  3. Type ifconfig at the prompt.


NOTE:
The IP parameters are not easily distinguishablewith this method.

Microsoft Windows

Alternatively, press the Win key + R on the keyboard to open the command prompt screen.

4At the prompt, type ipconfig or ipconfig /all, and then press ENTER on the keyboard.
