Updating the print server firmware via FTP

About FTP

FTP can be an effective way to update firmware should all of the other more common methods be unavailable; i.e., methods such as embedded Web Server, USB flash drive, and MarkVision.

Before considering this method for updating firmware, you will need to verify that:

  • The firmware file has a file extension that is cited in the Flash File Extensions table below.
  • You have a basic understanding of command prompt commands and a basic understanding of file directory structure.
  • FTP Function Access is not Disabled.
  • Port 21 or other designated FTP port # needs be open on your network.

The instructions below assume that the firmware update files have already been downloaded and extracted to a local hard drive directory, for example: inaflash.

Procedure

For any support file types, an FTP session can be used to update print server firmware.

To do this from a command prompt:

  1. From the C:\inaflash directory, type ftp <ip address> (replacing the words in arrow brackets with the adapter's IP address).

  2. Press ENTER. A Connected status message should appear, prompting for a login ID.

  3. Press ENTER to log in as an anonymous user.

  4. Type bin to set up a binary transfer.

  5. Type putfilename.pjl or .fls and press ENTER.

Note:  You may need to enter the full directory path if you are not in the directory in which the firmware file is located.

  6. When the transfer is complete, type bye to exit the FTP session.

Note:  These commands should be implemented quickly because the FTP session may 'time out'. A 'connection closed by remote host' error indicates that the session has timed out and therefore must be initiated again.

Warning—Potential Damage:  Do not to turn the adapter (or printer) off! Configured network adapter's settings should be saved; however, even so, it is a good idea to print all Menus and Network Settings pages before performing this update.

Why update firmware?

Firmware controls device functionality. Typically stored on flash memory, firmware drives all forms of communication on the network, the printer, printer-to-pc communication, as well as software utilities and printer peripherals.

During a firmware update, the flash memory is reprogrammed to include fixes, feature enhancements, and performance improvements; it is these updates that improve device performance and a user's experience.

Legacy MarkNet print servers or network cards:

Certain intermediate firmware levels may be required before updating to the latest available code level:

  • The MarkNet S adapter must be flashed to 1.9.14 before it can accept any higher level of firmware.
  • The MarkNet Pro adapters must also be flashed to 2.9.14 before they can be set to the current level.
  • The MarkNet XL must be flashed to 15.84 before it can be flashed to 79.## levels.
