Scan Center

Larger output File size and longer scan processing time in Scan Center than Scan to Network and other scanning apps

Issue description

The Scan Center app produces a noticeably larger PDF file size than Scan to Network, previous versions of Scan Center, or competitor machines, even when using default scan settings or similar settings (e.g. Color, Resolution, Content Type, etc).

Note:  This issue occurs to users upgrading to higher replacement model, e.g. from XM1140 to XM1242.

As an example, a-10 page menu settings page outputs to:

  • SNF on XM1140 = 669 KB
  • Scan Center on XM1242 = 5513 KB

As a result of the larger file size, you may also notice that scan jobs take significantly longer to show up in the destination folder than they did with Scan to Network. For a printer without a hard disk installed in it, you will see a "Processing" or "busy, please wait" message until the file is fully transferred.

Possible cause

Scan Center switched to using JPEG compression for the PDF format. Using JPEG compression results in an 8-bit depth image, with a "Gray Color setting".

Solution

Installing the Scan Center version 1.4.1 or newer or updating the printer firmwaret hat contains the newer app version will fix the issue. With this fix, the app switches to produce 1-bit depth images with a "Black and White" color setting. This will both reduce the file size and reduce the time that it takes for the file to reach the destination. On printers without hard disks, this solution will also reduce the time the device remains unusable due to the "processing" or "busy, please wait" message.

If the issue persists, search for more information related to this issue or contact support for further assistance.
