Reoccurring 281.16 scanner jam error

Issue description

The printer registers a repeating 281.16 scanner jam error message when the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) input tray has incorrectly loaded, stacked, or overfilled media.

Solution

The following recommendations resolve overfilled or disheveled media in the input tray.

1. Make sure that the paper size, type, and weight are set correctly on the printer or control panel.



2. Check the media:

   • Make sure that the ADF supports the weight of the media being used. Use the flatbed when scanning heavier paper.

   • Check the media side guides; make sure they are snug but not tight.

   • Check the curl of the media. Try to flex, fan, and straighten the print media before loading to reduce the curl.

   • Make the stack of documents in the ADF tray smaller and stacked neatly.

   • Ensure that the media is not being shoved into the tray.



3. Remove media from ADF input tray, and set the tray guides to the correct paper size. A correctly arranged media stack is shown here.



4. Reduce the number of pages inserted into the ADF input tray and perform a scan/copy test.
