Printer connected by USB are not working after Microsoft update

Issue description

After installing the latest KB update from Microsoft patches (KB5015807 or KB5016616) for Windows 10 devices, USB connected printers might show either of the following issues:

  • Stops printing
  • 900 kernel errors
  • Garbage printing

Some indications observed may also include:

  • Duplicate copies of printers installed on a device (commonly with a similar name and the suffix "Copy1")
  • Applications which refer to the printer by a specific name cannot print
  • Normal printer usage might be interrupted, resulting in failure of printing operations.

This has to do with the addition of IPP over USB to Windows 10. In some cases the USB printers are not correctly detected as supporting IPP over USB, so the printers get into a bad state.

Other issues reported are that a second instance of the printer is created, (Copy 1), and one of them will work.

Solution

  1. Disconnect the USB cable connected to the host (computer) and printer.

  2. Manually reboot the printer if necessary to return it to the “Ready” status.

  3. Once the printer is in the “Ready” status, either:

    1. Upgrade the printer to xxxxx.081.215 or the latest RIP firmware release either by accessing the printer's EWS capability via a network connection or by copying that release to a thumb drive, installing that drive into the printer's front USB port (if available) and then selecting that release.

    2. Disabling the printer's "IPP Over USB" setting by importing the VCC configuration bundle file to the printer either by accessing the printer's EWS capability via a network connection or by copying that bundle file to a thumb drive, inserting that drive into the printer's front USB port (if available) and then selecting that bundle file.

      Notes:

      • if a is performed, the printer will automatically restart after that update is completed. however, if b is performed, the printer will need to be manually restarted for that setting's change to take effect.
      • if b is performed, a reset to factory defaults will re‑enable that printer's "IPP Over USB" setting.
  4. In the host (computer), delete the printer under Control Panel > Devices.

  5. Once the printer is in the “Ready” state, reconnect the USB cable between the host (computer) and the printer. This allows the printer to be rediscovered by the host (computer).
