Print RFID Tags with PlanetPress

Overview:

Users of PlanetPress® can add RFID tags to existing shipping labels and high value documents using a specific model of printer.

This variable data printing software application from Objectif Lune™ allows users to pull data from different sources including print streams, databases and XML files to generate documents, labels, reports and invoices.

What's needed?

Besides the application, all that is needed is the Lexmark CS725R or Lexmark CX725R, and the necessary RFID media.

The Lexmark laser printer with RFID feature will enable printing and programming RFID tags.

To prepare PlanetPress, perform the follow steps:

  1. Change the output format from PostScript to PDF. This is standard functionality, and simply needs to choose the output in the workflow. No changes to the form are required.

  2. Modify the PlanetPress workflow for documents requiring RFID tags.

  3. Add a new step to “call an external program”.

  4. In the configuration of this object, define the information needed to pass to the Lexmark RFID Tag Command Generator, a command line tool from Lexmark.

NOTE:
The object in this workflow tool supports the use of switches and dynamic configurations to call a command line program so that no special coding is expected.

Lexmark RFID Tag Command Generator Utility:

Information on the Lexmark RFID Tag Command Generator utility can be found in the User's Guide on the

RFID Laser Printing support page

on Lexmark support site at

http:\\support.lexmark.com

.

How It Works:

When creating a new PDF:

  • PlanetPress will generate the document and call the Lexmark command line utility.

  • The utility will add the RFID string to the PDF file.

  • Once the Lexmark RFID Tag Command Generator updates the PDF, the resulting PDF will be picked up by the PlanetPress workflow and handed to the printer.

NOTE:
No driver is required since the printer supports PDF and no changes to the data source is required. PlanetPress will continue to merge the data for the document and create the output document.

Key components:

ComponentDescription

CS725R printer or CX725R MFP

These devices will be equipped with RFID firmware and necessary hardware.

RFID hardware

This option attaches below the printer (and above any input options). The RFID option programs RFID tags on the RFID media as they pass from the input option(s) to the printer.

Part numbers:

  • 41X1379 - RFID Option CRU Low Volt (North America)

  • 41X1613 - RFID Option CRU High Volt (EMEA)

RFID RIP/Engine Firmware

Product engineering team will always have the latest code version available.

Input Option

At least one standard Input Option (drawer/tray) attached below the RFID Option. The Input Option(s) is the source for the RFID media that is programmed by the RFID Option

RFID Media

Media that has an RFID tag attached. The media is usually plain paper or labels, but can be any supported media type or size.

IMPORTANT! The Lexmark CS725/CX725 fitted with the RFID option trays run on special firmware. DO NOT UPDATE the firmware on the device with standard firmware or it will disable the RFID function. Escalate to PE team if updated firmware is needed. If future releases of standard firmware incorporates the support for the RFID option so a customized firmware is no longer needed, this KB and other associated KBs will be updated.
