Exporting and importing user-defined configuration settings

Issue description

This article provides instructions on how to export and import settings defined and configured by the user.

• Prevent accidental deletion of shortcuts, destinations, security, or other user-configured settings.
• Reduce configuration times in certain environments.
• Re-apply configuration settings after service actions such as a controller board replacement. This occurs because many application settings are stored within internal memory on the controller board.

Exported settings include:

• Destinations for Apps; e.g., Scan to Network
• Shortcuts for resident functions; e.g., fax, email, Scan-to-PC, FTP
• App configuration settings; e.g., scan setting parameters and more.
• Security configuration settings excluding passwords, passphrases, and keys

Solution

Both methods are available for MS, CS, MX, XM, CX, XC series products, while products introduced during or before 2012 can only use the second method detailed below.

Before proceeding with the following steps, make sure to go through the Firmware update instructions for checking the printer firmware.

Note:  A network connection to the printers embedded web server is required to perform this procedure.

Method 1. EWS > Configuration Files

MFPs introduced after 2012 are able to capture one bundle.zip file to obtain most user-configured settings.

This procedure should be performed with controller board replacement and performing the Service Recovery Tool procedure.

Export Steps:

1. Determine your printers IP address.

   Do this one of three ways:

   • Navigate to Reports > Network Settings page.
   • Navigate to the printers STD. Network or Network 1 > Setup and locate the TCP/IP address.
   • Look for the address displayed in the upper left-corner of the LCD.


2. Enter the printers IP address into your browsers address field; for example, enter http://<printer IP address>, where printer IP address is the printers TCP/IP address.



3. Click on SETTINGS.



4. Click on Configuration Files.



5. Click Export.



6. Choose Save. Then save the file to a directory or folder of your choice.

   Note:  Make a note of where the file is saved.

Import Steps:

This procedure differs only in that you will click on Import in Step 5, locate and select the bundle.zip file, and then select Open and Import again.

You may also be using a different IP address depending on your purpose for performing this procedure.

Method 2. EWS > Settings > Export/Import

The steps presented in this article are valid for all embedded solutions framework (eSF) apps except Accuread Automate, Scan Center, and Scan To Network Folder (SNF).

MFPs introduced before 2012 require the capture the multiple .ucf files to fully backup or save most user-configured settings.

Note:  MFPs introduced after 2012 can still utilize this method; however, it is not as efficient for full backup purposes.

Export Steps:

1. Determine your printer's IP address. Do this one of three ways:

   • Print a network settings page.
   • Navigate to the printer's STD. Network or Network 1 > Setup menu options to locate the address.
   • Look for the address displayed in the upper left-corner of the LCD.


2. Open your web browser (i.e., Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer) and enter http://<printer IP address>, where printer IP address is the TCP/IP address of the printer.



3. Click on SETTINGS (for newer devices) or CONFIGURATION (for older devices).



4. Click IMPORT/EXPORT.



5. Select Export Embedded Solutions Settings File (Note the file name: settingfileesf.ucf).

   Other settings available for export:

   • Export Shortcuts File (shortcutsfile.ucf)
   • Export Settings File ( settingsfile.ucf)
   • Export Security Setups File (authfile.ucf)


6. Choose Save. Then save the file to a directory or folder of your choice.Important! Make a note of where the file is saved.

Import Steps:

This procedure differs only in that you will click on Import for any or all of the *.ucf files in Step 5, followed by Browse, Open, and Submit in Step 6.

You may also be using a different IP address depending on your purpose for performing this procedure.

* Universal Configuration File; e.g., settingfileesf.ucf

Note:  This method requires that you send every UCF file to the printer to fully restore all configured settings.
