Opting in and opting out
Lexmark products reporting anonymous data from the printer back to Lexmark is strictly an opt-in option and is opted-out by default. Customers can opt-in during the Initial Setup Wizard (as seen below) or by going into the Information Sent to Lexmark admin settings.Initial Setup WizardEmbedded Web server
Location path:Settings > General Settings > Information Sent to Lexmark > Supplies and Page Usage (Anonymous)Control panel
(Menu) > Settings > General Settings >eight (8)times until you see Information Sent to Lexmark.
If a device is opted-in to send data, the printer registers with Lexmark using https and establishes a data reporting schedule. In most cases, data will be sent once weekly, depending on the opt-in "level". However, Lexmark controls this schedule and could it change at a future date.
If the printer is not connected to the internet, or if some other technical reason prevents the printer from communicating over https to Lexmark, the opted-in printer will re-try occasionally, but no errors will be shown to the end user.
In all cases, the data sent is anonymous, but it should be noted that the printer's serial number is sent in the data. Users should look at http://www.lexmark.com/privacy and http://www.lexmark.com/deviceinformation to read statements about how Lexmark uses this information.
Users can opt-out at any time, and the printer will stop reporting data. If the user opts back in later, some data collected in the printer while the device was opted-out may be sent.
If a customer wants to change their opt-in "level", they may also do this on the EWS or panel, but they may need to choose "None of the Above" first, to reset the opt-in. This will be obvious on the UI, and generally applies when down-grading the opt-in level.
The EWS allows the customer to set a time window that will allow data transmission. For instance, if a customer only wanted the device to send data after 8pm, but before 6am, they should set the "Start Send" to 20:00 (8pm) and "Stop Send" to 06:00. This is just specifying a "window" in which data may be sent, and is not saying that data will send constantly during that entire timespan.
