Understanding imaging unit yield

Overview

Imaging unit maximum yield estimates are based on extensive testing at specific average usage conditions of 5% coverage and 3 one-sided pages (simplex) per print job.

Actual achieved yield varies based on several factors; including but not limited to, media size, print job complexity, device settings interaction with operating system & data transmission rate and device finishing options installed. Also, as average coverage, average pages/job or use of duplexing differs, expected yield also changes.

The following table provides maximum yield estimates based on varying average coverage, average print job length in both simplex and duplex mode. Lexmark’s Imaging Unit yield claim is highlighted in blue. Print device settings can be optimized to deliver improved performance in many operating environments and situations.

If actual yield performance is below the yield performance indicated below, please contact Lexmark Level 3 Technical Support for analysis and device setting recommendations, for your specific situation.

Print Job Length

Print job length is the average number of pages printed per job. Imaging unit maximum yield estimates are based on an average of 3 A4/Letter sized pages per job. If the average # of pages per job, throughout imaging unit life, is lower, the # of imaging unit cycles, per page printed, increases, which reduce the imaging units maximum page yield.

Toner Coverage (%)

Imaging unit yield is impacted by average coverage per page greater than 5%. This is due to a higher percentage of waste toner per printed higher coverage page, and its impact on imaging unit waste housing utilization. For most usage environments, a 5% is a reasonable average coverage estimate.

Environmental Conditions

Devices are tested at normal office conditions of 73-degrees F (22.8C) at 50% humidity. Operating the device in environments, which vary significantly from tested conditions, can impact imaging unit yield. In extreme cases of extended hot or cold operation, yield degradation can approach 25%.

Paper Size

Devices capable of printing A4/Letter size paper also include the capability of printing additional standard paper sizes, from smaller, or narrower sized, up to Legal sized. Because most printing on A4 devices uses A4/Letter sized paper, yield estimates are based on the A4/Letter size. Use of different(longer or narrower) paper sizes, throughout imaging unit life, can impact realized imaging unit yield.

2 Sided Printing (Duplex)

Printing on both sides of a sheet of paper (duplex) impacts imaging unit yield, relative to printing the same number of sides, on a single media side only (simplex). This is due to additional process time as the device turns the paper, versus simply picking an extra sheet of paper. The following table indicates the impact of duplex versus simplex printing across a range of usage environments.

Complex Print Jobs & Network Communication

Print settings work with print applications and print drivers to communicate precise print instructions. In certain usage environments, print settings can be optimized to improve imaging unit yield performance. Contact Lexmark Level 3 technical support to diagnose specific situations, and for more information on how to optimize settings for maximum yield performance in your specific usage situation.

Recommendations

It is important to understand the factors impacting imaging unit yield. Estimated maximum yields are shown below, which can serve as a reference point when determining yields across varying usage conditions. Actual yields vary based on actual customer usage. Lexmark’s Imaging Unit yield claim is highlighted in blue.

If actual performance falls below the yield shown below, please contact Lexmark Level 3 Technical Support for analysis and device setting recommendations for your specific situation.
