31.4x ‘Reinstall Missing or Unresponsive Cartridge’

Issue description

The printer is displaying the error message Reinstall Missing or Unresponsive Cartridge.

Error Code can be 31.40, 31.41, 31.42, 31.43, 31.44, 31.45, 31.46.


  1. Verify whether the Toner Cartridge is a Lexmark Genuine Cartridge.

    1. Toner Cartridge Serial Number can be verified at Identify Genuine Lexmark Supplies.

    2. If toner cartridge is non-genuine (3rd party), replace with a Lexmark Genuine Toner Cartridge.

  2. Follow the steps outlined in Checking the latest Lexmark printer firmware. After firmware update, perform Steps 3 and 4.

  3. Verify whether Toner Cartridge is correctly installed. Remove and reinstall the Toner Cartridge and Imaging Unit and see if it clears the error. If not, proceed to the next step.

  4. Use a spare Toner Cartridge of the same type and install it in the printer.

    If the error is cleared after inserting the spare toner cartridge, then the toner cartridge is likely defective and needs replacement.
