Fixing 31.40 or 31.60 errors appear when exiting sleep mode

Issue Description

When exiting sleep mode, the printer displays either 31.40 Reinstall Missing or Unresponsive Cartridge or 31.60 Reinstall Missing or Unresponsive Imaging Unit (IU) error.

Note:  For Lexmark MS310 model, the light combination that appears depicts the same error as the Exclamation point (!) and Toner Icon. LED lights are steadily ON and not blinking. Click here to view the image.


Follow these initial steps and see whether they eliminate the error:

  1. Remove the Toner Cartridge and Imaging Unit.

  2. Thoroughly shake the Imaging Unit.

  3. Re-seat both supplies back into the printer. Important third-party supplies check!

    • Genuine supplies - Confirm the use of Lexmark - branded supplies, toner cartridge, and imaging unit. Third-party supplies may not be compatible with the printer.
    • Refilled or reworked supplies - Confirm that this toner cartridge or imaging unit has not been refilled or reworked. A refilled toner cartridge can trigger this error.
  4. If Third-party supplies are installed or Lexmark toner cartridge / imaging unit has been refilled or reworked, then make sure to use a genuine and original Lexmark supply item. Should this correct the issue, please contact the sales vendor for a refund or another replacement of the supply that was causing the issue.
