Solid black page check

Issue description

A full black page from top to bottom.

Note:  First evidence of this problem may be seen as a partial black page.

Possible cause

In many cases, the first page of a multi-page job will appear with the top portion of the page having a heavy gray background and everything else after that is black, including subsequent pages in the same print job. If the print defect appeared only after replacing the Imaging Unit, a piece of the shipping separator or piece of tape may have been left on the Imaging Unit while it was being installed.

Solution

  1. Remove the Imaging Unit, and take out the piece of tape or carefully pull out the piece of broken plastic with a pair of pliers. Make sure that no other obstructions are left inside the Imaging Unit.

The following links show a sample Imaging Unit with a broken separator plastic stuck inside:

  2. If no plastic or other obstructions are found inside but the defect persists, please look to see whether the metal contact has been removed from the imaging unit. If so, reinsert the contact as seen below:

Service action

These steps will guide you in troubleshooting the print quality defect.

  1. Check the Imaging Unit for any damage or shipping materials still attached, specifically on the charge contact on the unit's right-hand side.

Should issue occur after installing a new Imaging Unit, check the metal contact as to whether it is present on the unit as shown on these comparison below:

    Notes:

    • If you won't see any metal contact, check the part in the box or on the piece of tape that was over this area at the time the Imaging Unit was installed.
    • Replace the Imaging Unit (part number: 52D0Z00 – WW Return MS/MX71x/81x Imaging Unit) if it shows any signs of damage. Otherwise, proceed to Step 3.
  2. Remove any contamination from the Imaging Unit contact, and check the unit for proper installation. Reinstall it if necessary.

Should the defect persist even after cleaning the contacts, proceed with the next step.

  3. Inspect the charge roll contact pin inside the printer, check for any signs of contamination and clean the contact pin. The charge roll contact pin must be sticking out and touching the Imaging Unit's metal contact.

    Notes:

    • You can check the charge roll contact pin by opening the printer's right-hand side cover and see whether the charge roll contact is indeed touching the Imaging Unit.
    • Contacts can be bent when supplies are forced out of the printer. If the contact pin is bent in, bend it to its correct position. This is to reform the connection if they are not touching. Replace IU Voltage Contacts (part number 41X1721), if needed.
  4. If the issue persists even if the charge roll contact pin is in good position, please check all the connections in the High Voltage Power Supply (HVPS).

    Notes:

    • Inspect for any possible loose connections with the charge roll contacts between the imaging unit and the HVPS. Click the links to view the charge roll contact connection in the HVPS and the Imaging Unit.
    • Check proper HVPS installation, reinstall or replace the HVPS (part number: 40X7578) if necessary.
  5. Should there be additional concerns or questions, contact the next level of support for further diagnosis.
