Solid color print or a colored background check

Overview

All your printed pages exhibit a solid color or colored background that completely covers over the entire printout. The image below illustrates an example.

This article will help you confirm the problem. Please refer to the directions in the table below to help determine which hardware part is causing the issue.

Solution

  1. For a print quality defect of this type, it is always advisable to print the following;

    • Menu Settings Page – To check the levels of the consumable supplies (i.e., items such as toner cartridges and imaging kit), because supplies that are at or near the end of their functional lives can cause various print quality issues independently of printer operation.
  2. Using the Menu Settings page, check the consumable supplies' levels. Under Cartridge Information, check whether any of the consumable supplies is low. If so, replace as necessary to see if this resolves the issue. Many print quality issues are caused simply by a supply item that is at or near the end of its expected functional yield. Resend the print job to the printer.

  3. Next check the status of the Imaging Kit. If a consumable supply is low, please replace the affected consumable supply and order the Imaging Kit . Resend the print job to the printer.

  4. If all of the consumable supply levels are adequate, try using another toner cartridge to ensure that the issue is not simply caused by defective consumable supplies.

  5. If another toner cartridge is not available, check for a cartridge that is dumping toner on the Image Transfer Unit (ITU) and on the primary tray. If a significant build-up of loose toner on the ITU and tray exists, it may be necessary to clean it out (preferably with a toner vacuum). A service call will probably be required to solve this issue.

  6. If issue persists after performing the steps mentioned above, there may be an issue within the hardware of the machine. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for other troubleshooting suggestions.
