Mixed color background on pages printed

Overview

All of your printed pages exhibit mixed colored backgrounds that completely cover over the entire printout. The image below illustrates an example.

Print Defect Sample

This article will help you confirm the problem. Please refer to the directions in the table below to help determine which hardware part is causing the issue.

Troubleshooting

StepsActions

1

For a print quality defect of this type, it is always advisable to print the following:

  • Menu Settings Page – To check the levels of the consumable supplies (i.e., items such as toner cartridges and imaging kit), because supplies that are at or near the end of their functional lives can cause various print quality issues independently of printer operation.

Note:  The User's Guide details instructions for navigating through the printer menus.

2

Using the Menu Settings page, check the levels of the consumable supplies. Check whether any one of the consumable supplies is low. Replace it to see if this resolves the issue. Many print quality issues are caused simply by a supply item that is at or near the end of its expected functional yield. Resend the print job to the printer. Did the issue return?

Yes: Continue to Step 3.No: If the page prints, the printer is functioning correctly.

Note:  Instructions for replacing supplies can also be found in the User's Guide.

3

If all of the consumable supply levels are adequate, try using another consumable supply to ensure that the issue is not simply caused by a defective supply.

4

If another toner cartridge is not available, check for a cartridge that is dumping toner on the Image Transfer Unit (ITU) and on the primary tray. If there is a significant build-up of loose toner on the ITU and tray, it may be necessary to clean it out (preferably with a toner vacuum). A service call will probably be required to solve this issue.

5

If issue persists after performing the steps mentioned above, an issue may exist within the machine's hardware. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for other troubleshooting suggestions.

  • Before installing any parts, inspect the High Volt Power Supply (HVPS) cable between the System Card and the HVPS. Verify that the cable is not loose or damaged. If connected properly, re-plug the HVPS cable at System Card and HVPS.
  • If issue continues, replace the HVPS. NOTE: Before replacing any parts, check whether toner is dumping on the Image Transfer Unit (ITU) and on the primary tray. If so, suck it out with a toner vacuum cleaner.
  • If issue persists, replace the Photoconductor Unit (PCU).

Parts to send on first service call:

Part #: 40X7625 — High Volt Power Supply (HVPS)

Parts to send on second service call:

Part #: 70C0P00— Photoconductor Unit

Note:  If the part numbers above do not work when ordering, please contact Lexmark Technical Support to get the current part numbers.

Note:  If necessary, refer to the Service Manual for more detailed diagnostic information as well as for FRU removal procedures.
