How to Set Up an LPM Print Queue on a Macintosh, Linux, or Unix System

This article details the steps required to set up a Lexmark Print Management (LPM) queue on a Macintosh OS X, Linux, or Unix environment.

See supported printers list found at Lexmark Document Distributor Administrator's Guide and Lexmark Print Management Administrator's Guide.

Before you begin

This setup requires a Windows server where the LDD Client service and Line Printer Daemon (LPD) are enabled.

Windows LPD service is off by default. To enable, go to Start > type Services, and then locate and enable the required services. If the LPD service is not available, follow the steps found on this Windows document.

The third-party product discussed in this article is manufactured by companies that are independent of Lexmark. Lexmark makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of these products.

You will need an admin account to add a queue.

1 Open a browser, and then go to the CUPS admin page.
2 Click Add Printer.
3 Select LPD/LPR Host or Printer found under Other Network Printers, and then click Continue.
4 Type lpd://<hostname>/<sharedqueuename> in the Connection box, where hostname is the computer name sharing the print queue (e.g., print server).
5 Enter values for Name, Description, and Location, and then click Continue.
6 Select Generic for the Make, and then proceed with the rest of the prompts.

Alternatively, you may perform the following steps for a Macintosh OS X system:

1 Click the Apple symbol > System Preferences, and then select Print and Fax or Print & Scan or Printers and Scanners.
2 Click the + button to add a new printer.

Click the IP tab, and then fill out the following fields:

  • Address: <Type the Windows Print Server IP address.>
  • Protocol: Line Printer Daemon – LPD
  • Queue: <Use the Windows Print Server Print Queue share name.>
  • Name: <Any>
  • Location: <Leave blank.>
  • Use: <Either select a Lexmark model if its listed in select printer software drop down box, or, you may use a Generic Postscript option if you cannot download the driver.>
4 Click Add to create the queue.
