Lexmark CX/CS8xx and XC/Cxxxx: Print Quality Diagnosis ? Random Horizontal Dark Marks

Affected Products:

Single-Function: CS820, CS827 and C6160

Issue Description:

When printing a document, random horizontal dark marks appear on the printout which varies in coverage and density from each page that is printed.

Solution:

How to verify the presence of the print defect

  1. Verify if any of the supplies were recently changed.

  • If Yes, try using a different supply and check if the issue persists.

  • If No, proceed to the next step.

  1. Checkif there is any damage to the Imaging Unit (both photoconductor and developer units).

  • If Yes, replace the Imaging Unit and check if the issue persists.

  • If No, proceed to the next step.

  1. Print the available Print Quality pages from the Control Panel by navigating through:

Settings > Reports > Print Quality Pages

  1. Compare the printed samples with the images shown above.


Note:
Keep the printed samples handy, should this be needed when escalating the call to the next level of support.

  1. Should the issue persist, please follow the recommendations provided in the next section.

Recommendation

Start by eliminating the possibility of a contaminated printhead by running the printer’s Clean Sensing and Laser Options function. To do this:

  1. From the Control Panel, navigate through:

a.Touch Settings.
b.Select Maintenance from under Device.
c.Touch Configuration Menu.
d.Touch Device Operations.
e.Select Clean Sensing and Laser Optics.
f.Touch Start.


Note:
This will run the wipers through ten cleaning cycles and will take a minute to complete.

  1. Print another set of Print Quality Pages.

  2. Check again for the defect’s presence using the Print Quality pages.

    • If the marks have disappeared, then the brush was effective in clearing the cause of the Issue.
    • If the marks changed location or became fainter, repeat Step 1 and 2.
