Paper jams in stapler bin using Letter‑sized media

Overview

Frequent jams occur when printing multiple sheets of a stapled job using letter-sized media. When the sheets enter into the multi-position stapler finisher's accumulator area, the “tamper” mechanism above the stapler bin crushes them. This causes the jam. The following images show samples of this:

NOTE:

  • The issue happens when sending a three to nine page print job to be stapled.
  • This only applies to portrait single-staple jobs (i.e., one staple on the page's upper left or lower right).

Suggested Remedy

Please contact Lexmark Technical Support to acquire the firmware that will fix the issue.

NOTE: The Lexmark representative might ask for the printer's current firmware level. Please refer to this link Checking the latest Lexmark printer firmware for the steps.

Get in Touch with Lexmark! for contact information. NOTE: When calling for support, you will be asked for your machine/model type and serial number (SN).

Please be near the products described in this article to expedite the support process and reduce callbacks.

Step

Action

1

Make sure the multi-position stapler finisher is fully installed; the line cord is installed and plugged into a wall outlet.

2

Check the main finisher unit’s firmware by following the same steps to check printer’s firmware. Please refer to this link Checking the latest Lexmark printer firmware.

After following the above steps, you should have the Device Information. The main finisher unit’s firmware level is outlined in red in this image:

3

If the main finisher’s firmware version is below 11.50, please proceed to Step 4.

Note: The start-of-production printers were shipped with finisher firmware version 11.47. A finisher firmware update is necessary.

4

Please go to this link to downloadMFin_11_50-R00.fls. This is the finisher’s firmware that will fix the issue. Note: Follow the same procedure of updating the printer’s firmware.

5

Once you obtain the firmware file, you may proceed to update the firmware by following the steps from this link Updating the Lexmark printer firmware.

IMPORTANT!

  • It would take eight minutes on the order of the process to complete the finisher’s firmware update and there will be a white display showing the status percentage. See this sample image regarding what you will see on the printer’s control panel:

Note: Please allow the update to complete. The printer resets, and performs a mechanical reset when the update has successfully completed.

  • The printer system will boot up with an “Invalid Bin 1” message on the control panel if the programming sequence is interrupted for any reason (such as powering off prematurely). See this sample image:
  • If this happens, you need to update the firmware again. Follow the same steps mentioned above how to update the firmware.

Note:

  • You will notice that this time the status percentage won’t be displayed. The user must wait for machine to reset. This process again takes about eight minutes to complete.
  • Updating the firmware via USB drive is not available.

6

Verify whether the firmware update is completed by performing Step 2. The finisher’s firmware version should now have 11.50.
