The printer locks up when waste toner bottle (WTB) is nearly full

What you will see

A printer with its Waste Toner Bottle (WTB) nearly full will be locked up and show a red ‘X’ message in the Control panel screen if the Waste Toner Bottle Near Full notification has been changed from “Warning” (default) to “Non Continuable Stop”. Replacing the WTB or restarting the printer will not reset the intervention message.

Suggested remedy

If your printer is running firmware version 2, it is not recommended to change the WTB Near Full notification from its default setting to “Non Continuable Stop”. Changing the notification setting will cause the printer to stop printing and hang once the WTB is nearly full of waste toner.

The succeeding firmware release should correct this issue. In the event that the settings have been inadvertently changed and thus cause the printer to hang, following the steps below should restore the printer to ready state.

Step

Action

1

The “WTB Nearly Full” notification setting is not available from the printer’s Control panel screen. You need to access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) to perform the changes.

To access the EWS, open your preferred Internet browser and type the printer’s IP address on its address field.

2

Once you are on the EWS, click “Settings” on the left pane, and then select “Device”. Click the “Notifications” shown in the main window.

3

Select “Custom Supply Notifications”.

4

Select “Waste Toner Bottle”.

5

Click to unselect “Non Continuable Stop” and then select “Warning”.

Step

Action

1

If a printer is locked with a red X nearly full message showing, check whether the customer has set the WTB Nearly Full notification to “Non Continuable Stop”.

2

Follow the steps outlined in this document’s customer-level section to verify the status of the WTB Near Full notification. Revert the settings back to default (Warning). This should unlock the printer.

3

Advise the customer to never change the WTB Near Full notification from the default of “Warning” to “Non Continuable Stop” if the printer is still running firmware level 2.
