31.46, 31.66, 655.84 Errors and 201.22 Paper Jam

Issue Description:

The printer displays either 31.46, 31.66, 655.84 error codes, or 201.22 paper jam. The error codes 31.46 or 31.66 (for MS/MXx1x) or 655.84 (for MS/MXx2x) are precursors to the 201.22 error code.

These errors are caused by either:

  • The toner cartridge is not fully inserted before closing the printer door.

  • The toner port ratchet on the IU is in the wrong position.


  1. Open the printer front door and inspect to see whether the cartridge button is stuck.

  2. Open the printer's front access door and check the cartridge plunger (MS/MX3/4/51x, MS/MX3/4/52x, MS/MX71x/81x) as to whether it is broken or damaged.

    1. For MS/MX3/4/51x, MS/MX3/4/52x, remove the toner cartridge and the imaging unit, and check whether:

      1. The toner is building up on the imaging unit port due to the inner lid not opening. Vacuum any loose toner from the imaging unit and inside the printer.

      2. The port ratchet is in the correct or incorrect position. Then carefully move the right side lever into the front position and proceed to step 4. Otherwise, skip to step 5.

    2. For MS/MX71x/81x, proceed to the next step. If an irregular sound emanates from the device, compare it to the Thumping and Grinding sound examples below:

Contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for service should any of these sounds be present.

  1. Reinstall the supplies and test the printer. It may take printing several pages to recover the print quality if starvation has started to occur.

  2. Remove and reinstall the cartridge. Push the toner cartridge body forward one last time to make sure that it is completely seated.

  3. Update the printer's firmware to the latest level. Refer to
