Multiple 451.05 or 459.05 Paper Jams when Using Lightweight Media

What you will see

The printer jams and posts a 451.05 or 459.05 error. This occurs whenever lightweight media is used on a large volume print job.

Possible cause

Lightweight media tend to be fluffy when exiting the printing process. This makes the paper level stack high. Once the stack is high enough, the tamper catches the sheets in the output bin, which consequently leads to a paper jam. See image below.

Recommended solution

NOTE:
This issue has been observed mostly with 024-Boise Cascade 16# LT paper. However, you may encounter this type of issue with any other lightweight media brand as it is related to how the paper curls during the printing process.

The printer has no settings that can be adjusted to avoid this error. What you can do is to reduce the effect of curling by using media that is dry and fresh out of a ream. If the media has been sitting in the tray for quite some time, flip it over in the tray before printing it.

Make sure also to remove the printed sheets from the output bin before the stack height reaches half of its maximum level.

How to remove the paper jam

To clear the jam message and resume printing, follow the directions below in order to locate and remove the jammed pages.

1Should the jam occur inside the HPU, the most effective way of removing the jammed sheet is by using the Jam wheel. To find this wheel, you need to open the rear door of the HPU. See the right-side image.
