WIA scanner driver interface fails to launch on Windows 10

Issue description

When a scan is initiated from any Windows application using a Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) scanner driver, the driver user interface (UI) fails to launch and the operating system displays an error message.

Note:  The failure message differs from application to application.

Solution

Upgrade the WIA scanner driver to the latest version available using Windows Update (WU). To do so, perform either of the following methods:

Method 1: Manually Update the Installed Driver

  1. Right-click the Start button, and click Device Manager.

  2. Right-click the WIA scan driver, and click Update Driver Software.

  3. Select "Search automatically for updated driver software" to download and update the WIA scan driver from WU.

Method 2: Automatically Update the Installed Driver

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Devices and Printers.

  2. Right-click the computer object under the Devices section, and click Device Installation Settings.

  3. Select "Yes, do this automatically (recommended)," and click Save Changes.

  4. Connect the printer to the computer with a USB cable to automatically download the latest WIA scan driver from WU.

Note:  If this setting is applied, any other device drivers installed on the system are also upgraded to the latest driver available from WU.
