Ghost or residual images on pages printed

Overview

A residual image (also referred to as a 'ghost', ‘dirty’ or 'echo' image) is a lighter copy in the document of a previously printed text or image. (See red-outlined examples in the image below.) The residual image will usually appear in one color only: black, cyan, magenta, or yellow. These colors correspond to the four different toner cartridges.

Troubleshooting

StepsActions
1Check whether the color alignment is acceptable.
2The most common cause of color alignment problems is a defective photoconductor unit and developers units. In order to determine which color is causing the alignment problem (assuming it is not obvious), verify that all of the developers units and photoconductor units are installed. If all developers units and photoconductor units are installed, remove them from the printer and then re-install.
3If re-seating the developers units and photoconductor units does not correct the issue, replace the developers units and photoconductor units with new supplies. If you have no replacement supplies in stock, please contact Lexmark Technical Support for other troubleshooting suggestions.
