A '920' or '920.00' service fuser error is appearing

Issue description

The printer displays a '920' type fuser error. In most cases, the error displayed will read '920.00 Service Fuser'.

Solutions

  1. A 920 error indicates that the printer registers the fuser unit (the internal heating element) as not having reached its proper operating temperature.

    • If this is the error's first occurrence, power off the printer and wait for more than ten minutes before powering it back on. The printer should come up to the Ready state. If it does, try printing again.
    • Note:  Should the fuser error not return after you have printed a few pages, continue using the printer as normal. Pay close attention to the printer over the next few days, however, to see whether the fuser error returns.

    • If this is not the first time that this error has occurred, skip ahead to the next step.
  2. If the fuser error returns on power-up or during printing, power off the printer once more. Open the left-hand access door ('Door A'; see the image below), and check for a sheet of paper jammed in the fuser unit. Remove any jammed print media you find, then power on the printer again. 3. Should the fuser error continue to occur, confirm that the printer power cord is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not through a surge device, power strip, or an outlet located in temporary cubical furniture. If the printer is connected through one of these devices, try plugging it directly into a wall outlet you know to be good before seeking a service action on the printer.

Note:  Please carry out this test even if the printer has worked at this power outlet in the past. Power strips and uninterrupted power supplies can cause a low amperage condition to occur within in the printer, which in turn may trigger a false fuser error.

  4. Power off the printer. Open the left-side access door (Door A), then remove the fuser unit. Check inside the fuser unit for any jammed sheets of paper. If you find paper jammed in the fuser unit, remove the paper, reinstall the fuser, and try printing again. Click here for an illustration.

  5. If none of these suggestions help to permanently clear the fuser error, the printer may require a service action to correct the issue. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service provider for additional assistance.

Note:  In most cases, a black plastic tab on the left-side access door is broken. To confirm this, open the left-side access door and look for the plastic tab shown in the image below. If the tab is broken, service will be required and the tab replaced to correct the issue. Click here for an illustration.
