What you will see

Whenever you print on 'short grain' paper or A5 size media, one of two issues occurs:

  1. The paper jams frequently in the printer. In most cases, the printer displays a 201.07 Paper Jam message and a sheet of paper folds up tightly inside the back of the printer. One edge of the jammed page may be slightly visible, though not necessarily. When you try to remove the jammed sheet of paper, it tears into pieces rather than coming out as an entire sheet.

  1. Paper exits the printer, but one or two corners of the page are folded over.

Explanation

The paper is getting caught on the fuser unit as it feeds through the printer. The fuser unit is composed of a set of rollers that heat the toner, thus fusing the toner onto the page. If the leading edge of a page catches on the fuser unit as it feeds through, a corner fold may occur. If the paper then stops and jams in the fuser unit, the fuser rollers will continue to turn. This forces the entire page into the fuser unit, where it is folded into a tight, 'fan-fold' or 'accordion' pattern.

Removing the jammed sheet of paper

If paper has jammed in the fuser unit and you have problems removing the paper, open the upper front cover. This will reduce the amount of pressure the fuser unit is putting on the paper, possibly making it easier to remove the page without tearing it.

If you are still unable to remove the jammed page, remove the toner cartridge. Look into the printer from the front. If you can locate the trailing edge of the page, try to grab it and remove it. IMPORTANT! Avoid using any metallic item, such as a screwdriver or pliers, when trying to retrieve paper that is stuck in the fuser rollers. There is a good chance that the item will scratch the surface of the rollers. If that happens, a line will begin to appear on all pages printed.

Other recommended actions

Confirm that the paper is loaded correctly into the paper tray and that the guides on the tray are set in the proper position. For specific directions on how to load paper into the tray,

If the paper appears to be loaded in the tray correctly, test the printer by printing on letter-size, long grain copy paper.

  • If changing the type of paper corrects the issue, the cause of the issue is related to the type of paper/media you are using. Paper that is short-grain may be subject to problems feeding through the printer.
  • If the same issues occur when you print on letter-size, long grain paper, a service action may be required to correct the issue.
