Intermittent Printing Issue on AS400 IBM i System

What you will see

Sporadic job loss or jobs failing to print in an AS400 IBM i System environment; TCP/IP trace information shows that the printer does not reply to the IBM host over PJL or SNMP.

What is known is that the Print time out on the printer is disabled to prevent the device from terminating the job if or when a delay occurs in the job's data stream reaching the device.

Suggested fix and explanation

Set the network job time out to 0 from the default 90 seconds value. This setting was formerly called End of Job time-out or simply Job time-out.

To do this from the Embedded Web Server (EWS), navigate to Settings > Network/Ports > General Network Settings (Active Card) > Network Job Timeout = 0.

An alternate path may also be Settings > Network/Ports > Network Overview > Network Job Timeout.

If the host and device are doing things a little differently, then these time-outs can be problematic with job pacing and control. The host is either causing too long of a delay or it is injecting some sort of blank data into the end of the job, and this may cause the printer's emulator to register that more data exists.
