If you are printing on any media other than plain, white, copy paper, please remove that print media from the printer and replace it with plain copy paper. Try printing a few pages on plain paper to see if the issue begins to clear.

If changing the print media helps to correct the issue, confirm that the original print media is supported for use in this printer. To view a list of supported and recommended print media, refer to the printer's User's Guide.

2

If the issue continues on plain copy paper, determine how much of the page is affected by this issue.

If the affected area is restricted to only the top or bottom centimeter (cm) of the page, the printer may require a code update to correct the issue. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional information.

If more than just the top or bottom one centimeter of the page is affected, try replacing the toner cartridge.

  • If replacing the toner cartridge corrects the issue, the original toner cartridge may be running low on toner. You can try lightly shaking the original toner cartridge to redistribute the toner and try it again to see if the quality improves. If that does not help, the cartridge will need to be replaced. NOTE: If the failing cartridge is relatively new, it may be eligible for replacement under warranty. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for more information.
  • If replacing the toner cartridge does not correct the issue, a part on the printer may be malfunctioning. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance.

1

Check the current level of the printer's Engine code. This can be done by using the operator panel on the printer to enter the printer menus. Look for the Reports menu and then look for Menu Settings Page. Select this, and the settings pages will print out.

2

On one of the pages, you will see a section labeled Printer Information. Under that section, you will see the printer's current Engine code level.

3

If the code level is below E206b (for example, code levels AR.JP.E204and AR.JP.E206 are both below E206b), you will need to update the printer's Engine code before you try replacing any parts.

If the Engine code is already at the level of E206b or higher, skip ahead to Step 4.

To access/download the most recent engine code file, go to the printer firmware download site and enter the appropriate key code. To obtain the key code, you will need to contact Lexmark Technical Support.

The downloaded file is a .ZIP file. You will need to unzip the file and extract the smaller files within it. Save these files to a directory or folder of your choice. Make a note as to where you have these files saved. Once you have extracted the necessary files, you can begin copying the extracted files over to the printer.
