High capacity input tray option continues to show as empty, even after loading paper into the option

What you will see

The printer continues to read the High Capacity Input Tray (HCIT) option as empty, even after you load paper into the option.

NOTE: The HCIT (also called a '2000-sheet feeder option') is highlighted with yellow in the image below. The location and tray number of the option may vary, depending on the number of other paper trays installed.

Recommended actions

Power off the printer. Wait ten seconds, then power on the printer again. This should reset the printer as well as the HCIT option, and clear the error message.

If the issue returns

If this issue repeats regularly (where every time the feeder option runs empty, you have to power the printer off and back on again to reset it), a service action may be required in order to correct the issue permanently. A part on the option may need to be repaired or replaced. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for more information.

  1. Get the printer to the 'Ready' state.

  2. Open the front door to the HCIT option, as if you are about to add more paper to it.

  3. With the front door open, see if the message on the printer screen has changed to a "tray open" or a "tray missing" message. If the printer screen remains at the 'Ready' state, the switch assembly responsible for monitoring the front door may be stuck. To correct this issue, follow the steps in the table below.

Step

Action

1

Open the front door of the HCIT option.

2

Locate the plastic switch (actuator) for the front door. The switch is located along the left-hand wall inside the option. See the part highlighted in the picture below. NOTE: You may need to remove the lifter plate (tray) in order to access this switch.

3

Pull the switch gently along the wall towards the front of the option until it clicks to its forward range of motion.

4

If you removed the lifter plate (tray), reinstall it.

5

Load one or two sheets of paper into the HCIT option, then close the door.

6

Confirm that the lifter plate (tray) moves up correctly and that the 'Tray Empty' message is cleared. If it is, print a job that will use those pages and cause the option to display another 'Tray Empty' message.

7

Load more paper into the HCIT option, close the door, and confirm that the option is working correctly now.

8

If the 'Tray Empty' message does not clear, the sensor responsible for monitoring the front door may be malfunctioning. This requires a service action to correct the issue. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance.

NOTE: The customer can continue to print from the other paper trays until a service action on the HCIT option can be arranged. Another temporary fix is to power the printer off and on. This will clear the message until the next time the HCIT option runs empty.
