202.x3 and 202.x6 paper jam

Issue description

A 202.x3 or 202.x6 occurs when the device is experiencing a 'warm up' jam. A ‘warm up’ jam happens when the paper is improperly cleared from a previous jam. However, once the paper path is completely cleared of all jammed paper, the printer should resume normal printing.

Solution

When the printer displays a 202 type paper-jam error, select Show areas on the operator panel to be guided where the jam has occurred.

Clearing the paper jam

To resolve the paper jam error message, you must first clear the entire paper path and then press the Select button () or on Continue to clear the message and resume printing.

Note:  Images in this article show the Lexmark T65x, but the same directions apply as well to the Lexmark X65x printers.

  1. Push the release latch then lower the Multipurpose Feeder Door.

  2. Push the release latch and open the Upper Front Cover.

  3. Lift and pull the Print Cartridge out of the printer.

Note:  Warning—Potential Damage : Do not touch the photoconductor drum on the underside of the cartridge. Use the cartridge handle whenever you are holding the cartridge.

  4. Place the print cartridge aside on a flat and smooth surface.

Note:  Warning—Potential Damage : Do not leave the cartridge exposed to light for extended periods.

  5. Remove the jammed paper. If the paper is not easy to remove, stop pulling and proceed to Step 6.

Note:  Caution! The jammed page may be covered with unfused toner which can stain garments and skin. In addition, the inside of the printer might be hot. If the page feels hot, allow the surface to cool before removing.

  6. Pull down the Top Rear Door. Slowly remove the jammed paper to avoid tearing it.

Note:  If you were printing on both the front and back sides of the page (duplexing), check out the steps outlined in 'Check Duplex' or '23x' paper jam errorthis article.

  7. Close the top-rear door.

Note:  Make sure the rear door is completely closed. If not done, it can cause the paper to jam.

  8. Once the entire paper path is clear, press the Select button () or on Continue to clear the message and resume printing.

If after following the steps above, the printer still displays a 202.x3 or 202.x6 paper jam message, turn off the printer, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn the printer back on.

Did the error message return?

  • If NO, print a test page. If the page prints, the printer is now functioning correctly.
  • If YES, continue with the instructions below.

  1. Turn off the printer, wait for one minute, then unplug the printer's power cord.

  2. Press the button (A) securing the Fuser Wiper Cover and lift it up to remove from the printer.

Note:  Caution! The Fuser Wiper bottom surface might be hot. To reduce the risk of injury from a hot component, allow the surface to cool before touching.

  3. Pull down the Top Rear Door, then remove the left and right straps by twisting the straps until they are in a vertical angle. Position the Top Rear Door at a 45° angle, then lift it up and away from the printer.

  4. Press the two tabs (A) on the Fuser Access Door and detach it from the printer.

Note:  Check for any damaged parts. If any part appears damaged, a service call will likely be required to resolve the issue.

  5. Press the two buttons (A) and pull the Fuser Unit away from the printer.

Note:  The Fuser Unit might be hot. To reduce the risk of injury, allow the fuser to cool before touching. In addition, check for any damage in the fuser unit. If any parts appear damaged, a service call will likely be required to resolve the issue.

  6. Slowly remove the jammed sheet to avoid tearing it. Also remove any debris or small pieces of paper from inside the printer.

Note:  If no material appears stuck anywhere inside the printer or in the fuser, inspect the Fuser Exit Sensor and the Narrow Media Sensor Flags and see if they are stuck. Using a blunt object, poke the sensor(s) gently a few times to make sure that they are movable.

  7. Re-install the parts back into the printer.

Note:  When re-installing the Fuser Unit, make sure that the electrical connection (B) and the two buttons (A) are properly secured.

  8. Plug the printer power cord directly into a grounded wall outlet, then turn on the printer.

  9. Print a test page. If the page prints, the printer is functioning correctly.

    Did the error message return?

    • If NO, the issue is resolved.
    • If YES, continue with the instructions below.

If the paper jams continue

  1. If the device is posting other paper jam errors, use the Show Areas feature on the printer operator panel to help you locate and clear the jam. If the paper jam errors continue after doing so, the printer will likely require service to correct the issue. For more information on arranging repair service, contact Lexmark Support.

  2. If the 202.xx paper jam errors continue, clear the jammed paper and power off the printer. Open the printer's Top Rear Door and check the following:

    • Make sure that the paper size and type matches with that of the paper in the tray.
    • Make sure that there are no small pieces of paper inside the printer that are blocking the paper path.
    • Check for any broken or loose parts inside the printer. If damage exists, a service call will likely be required to resolve the issue.
    • Pull down the Top Rear Door and inspect for any damaged parts. Then print one page. If the paper jams again, check at the back of the printer to determine what causes this issue.
    • If the paper comes out easily when the rear exit door is open, a guide at the printer's Output Cover in the back might be loose. Try removing the Output Cover. Close the Top Rear Door and print one page. If the paper jams, check at the top for any broken or loose parts. If anything appears damaged, the printer will likely require service to correct the issue.
    • If you cannot find any paper jammed in the printer, but it continues to display these errors, the printer may have either a broken or stuck Exit Sensor Flag or the Narrow Media Sensor Flag.
    • If you find any broken sensor flags, remove and save them then try to print again. If the paper jam errors continue, the printer will likely require service to correct the issue.
    • Try printing again with plain copy paper, if not done so before. This will eliminate specialty media as a factor causing the jamming issue. Even if the specialty media has worked in the past, certain specialty papers, letterhead stock, label stock, and card stock are more prone to jamming in the fuser unit. For more information on recommended paper types, refer to the Card Stock and Label Guide.

Note:  If the paper jam error code ends in .3x, .4x, .5x, then the fuser unit has exceeded its expected life and you will need to have the maintenance kit replaced before warranty service can be performed. For more information, contact Lexmark Support or an Authorized Service Provider in your area.

Note:  Replacing the fuser assembly will take care of both issues as it contains both sensors.
