What you will see
The printer stops printing and displays one or more of the following numeric error codes: 902.76, 902.77, 902.78, 902.79, or 902.86.
A Service Engine Software or a Service Fuser message will accompany the numeric error in most cases. The following is an example: 902.86 Service Engine Software.
Clearing the error
The first time this error displays, power off the printer. Leave the printer off for at least ten seconds. This gives it a chance to reset. Then, power the printer back on. If it goes to the 'Ready' state, try printing. If the error message does not return, continue with normal usage. Pay close attention to the printer over the next few days to see if the error message returns.
If the error message returns when the printer is powered-up or when you try to print, confirm that the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not through a surge device or power strip. See the suggestions below.
Check the power source
If the printer is not directly plugged into a wall outlet, power it off and plug it directly into the wall. Perform this test even if the printer has previously worked correctly on this surge device. Power strips and uninterrupted power supplies can cause a low amperage issue which may cause one or more of these error messages. This is especially important if the error messages occur intermittently.
If possible, also test the printer by plugging it into a different wall outlet before seeking service. This will eliminate the power source as a possible cause for the issue.
If the error continues
If the error messages continue to occur, the Fuser assembly inside the printer may be broken. If so, it will need to be replaced. The fuser assembly is a supply item that a customer can purchase and install. if you have questions about ordering a replacement fuser assembly, need instructions on replacing the fuser, or if you prefer to set up a service call instead, please contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance.
