What the message means
In most cases, a Tray Low message indicates that one or more of the paper tray sources are low on paper or nearly empty. It also indicates which paper tray is low to help you locate and clear the error. For example, the message Tray 2 Low indicates that Tray 2 is low on paper (see the picture below for guidance on the paper tray locations).
NOTE: Side feeders such as the multipurpose feeder and the envelope feeder will NOT post a Tray Low message.

Troubleshooting
NOTE: If you have just loaded paper in the tray while the printer was off and encounter this issue, leave the printer on and open the tray for a few seconds. Then close the tray and allow the printer one minute to move the tray into position and read the paper level again. This should update the paper-level status and clear the error. If the message continues, please refer to the directions in the table below to help determine which hardware part is causing the issue.

1 | Power off the printer, wait for 30 seconds, and then power the printer back on. Did the error message return? Yes: Continue to Step 2 or go to 'Contacting Lexmark' for information.No: Print a test page. If the page prints, the printer is functioning correctly. Note: If you have already tried powering the printer on and off, skip ahead to Step 2.

2 | Open the paper tray indicated in the error message. |
3 | If the tray is empty or nearly empty, simply adding more paper should clear the error. |
4 | If the tray is more than half full, remove all paper from the tray. Check the tray and look for any obstructions and remove those you find. Also look for damage to the tray. If any parts of the tray appear damaged, a service call will likely be required to resolve the issue. See 'Contacting Lexmark' for information. |
5 | If everything appears to be fine, carefully reload the paper back into the tray and try printing again. Did the error message return? Yes: If the issue persists, a service action may be required in order to correct the issue. For assistance in setting up service, please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service provider.No: Print a test page. If the page prints, the printer is functioning correctly. |
