A Repeating Series of Beeping Noises on a Lexmark T65x and X65x Series Printer

What you will hear

A beeping noise indicates your printer has encountered a "fail" condition. This fail condition should also display on the printer's operator panel.

The printer usually beeps in a pattern to indicate which hardware is failing. The usual pattern is three beeps followed by a pause, or a repeating series of five beeps followed by a pause. If your printer beeps ONCE every five or ten seconds or so, a device external to the printer is the probable cause.

What to do

Check the printer's display panel for error messages. If it says READY, BUSY, or POWER SAVER, the printer is functioning correctly. If the beeping noise continues, try the following suggestions below.

  1. If the printer beeps THREE times followed by a pause, it is reporting a "hardware failure" condition. The exact error message should be posted on the printer's display panel. Check what the error message is indicating and perform the appropriate action. If you cannot read the exact error condition from the panel, power off the printer and let it sit for a minute before turning it back on. If this problem continues to occur, the printer will probably need service. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service provider for additional assistance.

  2. The printer beeps FIVE times followed by a pause. The operator panel screen will not light up and both the printer and/or the scanner unit are unresponsive. In this case, power off the printer and let it sit turned off for a minute. If this problem continues to occur after powering up the printer again, then replacement of either the operator panel or the operator panel cable is required. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service provider for additional assistance.

  3. If it goes into a repeating series of FIVE beeps while diamonds appear on the printer display at power up, this usually indicates some electrical problem in the printer. Remove all install options; i.e., an optional paper tray, any extra memory, and any optional network cards. Power on the printer again. If the printer screen still shows all diamonds and beeps five times, the printer's main engine/system board will probably need replacement. If the printer comes to READY, one of the install options on the printer is broken or defective. If the diamonds return after you install a specific option, remove that particular option and set it aside. It will probably need service or replacement if the printer is still under warranty.
    NOTE:
If this is a third-party option, or an option designed for a different printer model, it may be incompatible with this printer. Lexmark recommends you use components manufactured by Lexmarkthat are designed specifically for this printer model. If you have found the source of the issue and need help arranging service, please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service provider for additional assistance.

  4. If none of the above suggestions resolve the issue, check whether your printer is connected through a surge suppression device or some sort of uninterrupted power supply or other power box. Turn off the printer and connect it directly to its own wall outlet. (These devices will beep whenever a large amount of amperage or voltage is used, or if the device itself is beginning to wear out.) If the beeping stops, you will need to leave the printer connected directly to the wall to avoid this condition.
    NOTE:
This step is especially important if the beeping noises occur intermittently. Power strips, surge protectors, extension cords and uninterrupted power supplies (UPS) can trigger this type of issues. This is true even if the printer has worked on this surge device previously. Lexmark recommends that laser printers should be directly connected to a wall outlet, with no extension cord, power strip, or UPS. For a detailed explanation, please
