Inaccurate toner level indicator on a new cartridge

What you will see

The printer/MFP displays an 80% toner level for the new 35K toners instead of 100% full on the Menu Settings page(s) as well as the operator panel. This article will help you confirm the problem.

Check the toner level under Supply Information section on the device statistics pages.

    6

Check the ‘Sides on Cart’ value, the default value for a newly installed brand-new genuine Lexmark toner cartridge is zero (0). If the value shows zero (0) but the ‘Toner Level’ is less than 100% (roughly around 80%), please check the base code level of your device. If the code level is below P516, please update the code to the latest version.

Note: If 'Sides on Cart' is not zero (0), then that machine has been printing with that toner cartridge and the toner level will be less than 100%.

    For Lexmark X86xe Series MFP:

    Steps

    Actions

    1

Make sure the printer is on and Ready appears on the display.

    2

Note: If 'Sides on Cart' is not zero (0), then that machine has been printing with that toner cartridge and the toner level will be less than 100%.

  2. Access the printer's embedded web server (EWS). Before you begin, a functional network installation (wired or wireless – not a local USB installation) is required for access to the web server of any Lexmark network printer.

    For Lexmark W850 and X86xe Series Printer/MFP:

    Steps

    1

First determine the IP address of the print server within the printer/MFP.

    2

Launch your preferred web browser application (e.g., Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer).

    3

In the address field after the http://, enter the printer's IP address (e.g., http://192.168.1.5 or http://169.254.1.42).

    4

    Click on Reports.

    5

To check for the toner level, click on Device Statistics.

    6

Identify DLEs or Special Firmware

Certain functions or applications may require special firmware. Inform the technical support agent of any extensive variation in code levels.

IMPORTANT! Look for the presence of any downloadable language emulators (DLEs). All printer/MFPs with any one of these following downloadable language emulators (DLE) will require a different code specific to the emulation type. Downloadable language emulators can be also found under Device Information.

  • Bar Code
  • Prescribe
  • Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS), etc

NOTE: Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for the compatible firmware for a corresponding DLE. DLE cards are base-code dependent. Incorrect download and flashing to the printer could lead to an irrecoverable error.

Code Update Methods

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Make sure the printer is READY to receive firmware, and do not interrupt the printer's power or data connection during the update process.
  • Make sure the printer is not in an intervention-requested state such as: paper jam, toner empty, tray empty; or any other warning or error message.
  • Make sure the printer is able to communicate with the computer that will be hosting the downloaded and extracted firmware file.
  • Make sure your organization or business has approved this firmware update. Why? Certain printers may contain special printer firmware builds specific to a particular work process or function.
  • Again, identify the presence of any Downloadable Language Emulator (DLE) option cards; e.g., Barcode, ImageQuick, Forms/Prescribe, PrintCryption and IPDS. Improper code updates can lead to an irrecoverable error.
  • A ll included .fls files included in the firmware-download package should be sent to the printer.
  • DO NOT UPDATE firmware if uncertain about any of these precautions. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance.

Open your internet browser and enter the IP address of the printer. Select Settings >Update Firmware.

Solution

An older printer/MFP base code that causes an error on the toner level calibration is the source of this issue. The error caused the new 35K toners toshow an 80%toner level instead of 100% full on a Lexmark W850 and X86x printer/MFP. There is no problem with the new toner cartridge and it is actually full of toner. Only thetoner level calculation is wrong. Updating the firmware levelsP515 (X86xe) or P516 (W850) and higher should resolve the issue.
