How to Enable PABX for Sending Faxes in a Private Automated Branch Exchange with Lexmark MFPs

Overview

Consider this procedure if you observe the following symptoms:

  • You are unable to send a fax.
  • You do not hear any dial tones when connecting a standard phone to the phone line.
  • 902 "No Dial Tone Present" errors displayed on transmission log or job call log.

Before you begin

Verify the type of phone system utilized and make sure your MFP is connected to a PABX* and not some other phone system.

*PABX, or PBX, (Private Automated Branch Exchange) – A telephone network which allows a single access number to offer multiple lines to outside callers while providing a range of external lines to internal callers or personnel.

How to Enable "PABX"

Method 1: Control panel

This method is preferred if the device is not on the network.

  1. Click on the MENU button.

  2. Click the down-arrow and click on SETTINGS when visible.

  3. Click on the FAX SETTINGS.

  4. Select ANALOG FAX SETUP.

  5. Click on FAX SEND SETTINGS.

  6. Click on the down-arrow until BEHIND A PABX is visible.

  7. Place a checkmark next to this value.

  8. Click on SUBMIT.


NOTE:
Turning ON this feature may also prevent successful fax transmission. Change this setting only when necessary.

Method 2: Embedded web server

This method is preferred if the device is on the network and you are not near the machine.

  1. Obtain the printer's TCP/IP address.

  2. Open your web browser.

  3. In the URL field, type http:// <MFP's IP_ADDRESS>, where IP_ADDRESS is the TCP/IP address of the printer.

  4. Click on SETTINGS.

  5. Click on FAX SETTINGS.

  6. Click on ANALOG FAX SETUP.

  7. Scroll down to FAX SEND SETTINGS.

  8. To enable blind dialing, place a checkmark next to BEHIND A PABX.

  9. Click on SUBMIT.

"Dial Prefix" mistakes

Double entry of the dialing prefix is one of the more common mistakes in PBX environments.

  1. Make sure fax shortcuts do not contain this prefix.

  2. Make sure manual entry of the telephone number does not contain the dial prefix.

  3. If you are unsure of the dial prefix, the need for additional line pauses or call codes, contact your phone line administrator.

How to Set a "Dial Prefix" on a Laser MFP if unsure whether or not a dial prefix has been entered on the MFP. You can also print a Menus Settings page to see if this value is enabled on the device.
