241.10, 241.11, 241.12, 241.14, 241.16 and 241.18 paper jam or sensor (input) late jam errors

Overview

A 241.xx error (where 'x' can be any number) indicates that the printer has registered a sheet of paper as jammed in or around the standard paper tray (Tray 1). You may also get this message if the printer is having difficulties pulling up the paper from the tray due to a worn out or dirty pick tires.

Troubleshooting

Follow the steps tabled below to locate and remove jammed pages and clear the jam message. To view images illustrating the relevant procedures, click the links in the steps. NOTE: The images show a Lexmark T65x model printer. However, the directions will also apply to the Lexmark X65x models.

IMPORTANT! If the job printing at the time of the jam consisted of more than one page, multiple pages are likely stuck in the printer. Follow all of the steps in the table below and confirm that the entire paper path is clear before printing again.

Step

Action

1

Remove the standard paper tray (Tray 1).

NOTE:If a different paper tray is indicated in the error displayed, remove that paper tray first.

2

Look for and carefully remove any jammed paper.

NOTE: If you remove the jammed page and the print job consisted of only one sheet, insert the paper tray and skip ahead to Step8 below.

3

Open the lower and upper-front covers .

4

Remove the toner cartridge and look inside the printer. Search for and carefully remove any jammed paper or other obstructions. Then reinstall the toner cartridge.

5

Open the upper-rear cover at the back of the printer. Look for and remove any jammed paper.

6

If you were duplexing (i.e., printing on both the front and back sides of the page), check the duplex area for any jammed pages.

NOTE: On T650 models, the duplex refers to an option that can be added to the printer. Please refer to the User's Guide for paper removal directions.

For all other T65x and X65x models, the duplex area is located in the area of Tray 1. Confirm that the paper tray is removed. Open the lower-rear cover. Locate and push down on a green tab. This should lower a metal plate. Look for and remove any jammed paper here. At the front of the printer, locate another green tab along the top of the area where the paper tray goes. Push down on the tab to lower a different metal plate. Remove any obstructions found here.

7

Once you have confirmed that the entire paper path is clear, close all covers/doors and reinstall the paper tray.

8

Press the check button or Continue and try printing again.

If paper continues to jam

Make sure the paper is loaded correctly into the tray. The paper guide on the right-hand side of the tray should rest against the paper stack, supporting the stack but not binding the paper. Also, make sure not to load paper past the 'max fill' line on the tray.

In addition, make sure that you are printing on plain, white copy paper. If not, try printing it even if a special paper worked fine in the past. By carefully selecting print media and loading the media properly, you should be able to avoid most paper jams.NOTE: For information on recommended media types, refer to the printer's Users Guide.

If you try all of the suggestions above and the printer continues to jam, or if you cannot locate any paper jammed in the printer yet the error continues, please contact Lexmark Technical Support.

1

Check the media trays for damaged media. Also, make sure the paper is loaded correctly into the tray. The paper guide on the right-hand side of the tray should rest against the paper stack, supporting the stack but not binding the paper. Make sure not to load paper past the 'max fill' line on the tray. Try printing again.

Is the paper jam error resolved?

Issue resolved.

See Step 2.

2

Check the pick tires (see picture below) whether they are:

  • The old type having a smooth surface, replace the pick tires with the new type that has a serrated surface (40X4308).
  • The new type having the serrated surface, clean the pick tires with alcohol and a paper towel to remove any contamination. Try printing again. Make sure to try to print at least 10 sheets.

  • Old Ground Pick Tires PN-40X0070 (smooth surface)
  • Bidirectional pick tires PN - 40X4308 (serrated surface)

Issue resolved.

See Step 3.

3

Remove the cartridge and check if there are media (paper) stuck in the cartridge area.

Are there any media stuck in the cartridge?

Replace the input sensor. SeeService parts.

See Step 4.

4

If there are no media stuck in the cartridge area or anywhere along the paper path and there are media in the tray, replace the pick arm assembly. See Service parts.

Issue resolved.

See Additional information.

Step

Action

1

Check the media trays for damaged media, overfilling, or guides that are too tight.

2

Check the paper path, duplex path, and media tray pass through areas for obstructions.

3

Input Tray Test to verify if the printer is having difficulties pulling the paper from Tray 1. Refer to How to Run Input Tray Test for the steps on how to run input tray test.

If paper jam happened in the process, check the pick tires (see picture below) whether they are:

  • The old type having a smooth surface, replace the pick tires with the new type that has a serrated surface (40X4308).
  • The new type having the serrated surface, clean the pick tires with alcohol and a paper towel to remove any contamination. Rerun input tray test. If the source of the jam is the internal duplex, verify that the path is free of obstructions. If the source is the external duplex, the external duplex may need to be replaced.

  • Bidirectional pick tires PN - 40X4308 (serrated surface)

4

Remove the cartridge and check if there are media (paper) stuck in the cartridge area. If yes, replace the input sensor.

5

If there are no media stuck in the cartridge area or anywhere along the paper path and there are media in the tray, replace the pick arm assembly.

6

Perform Base sensor (input) service check found in the printer's Diagnostic Menu to check for sensor failure.

7

If all steps above did not resolve the issue, refer to the Error Code Table in the printer's Service Manual for more recommended diagnosis and repair procedures.
