Finding loose parts in the box after opening a new or replacement fuser unit

Issue description

Opening a new or replacement fuser assembly unit box shows two separate pieces as seen in the following images. The two pieces to look for are a long, black, plastic piece and/or a metal clip.

You open a brand new fuser assembly and one or two pieces are loose in the box. The two pieces to look for are a long, black, plastic piece and/or a metal clip. These two pieces are shown in the images below.

Click here to view a larger picture of both pieces alongside a fuser unit.

These two pieces can come loose or fall off the fuser unit during shipping. As long as the parts are not broken, either part can be reattached to the fuser unit, enabling the fuser to function properly.

Note:  It is safe to use the fuser unit after reattaching these parts. These parts will not fall off again once the fuser is installed into the printer. The printer's frame will hold these pieces in place.

Solution

Even if only one part has fallen off the fuser, use the steps and pictures in the table below and check the position of the other part as well. The other part may be attached, but it is probably either loose or not in the correct position.

  1. Start with the metal clip. Slide the clip onto the fuser unit into the location and position as seen here.

  2. Find the clip as seen here and turn clockwise until is it in the correct position highlighted by the red box in the second, in this image.

  3. After re-installing (or checking the position of) the metal clip, proceed with the black, plastic guide piece. Look for two small holes on both the left and right-hand sides of the metal frame of the fuser unit, in front of the orange-red roller. The holes are highlighted in this illustration.

  4. Align the tabs on the left-hand side of the guide with the corresponding holes in the fuser's metal frame, then securely insert the left-hand side of the guide.

Note:  If you are having problems lining up the tabs on the guide with the holes, you may have the guide in the incorrect position. Try flipping the guide over or flipping it around. Click here to view an image.

  5. Once you have the left-hand side securely installed, align the right-hand side of the guide with the corresponding holes in the fuser metal frame, and then insert the right-hand side of the guide.

Note:  It will be necessary to bend the guide slightly to get the tabs inside the metal frame. Bend the guide in the middle. This will work the best and reduce the chances of the guide cracking or breaking. The picture below shows what the fuser unit will look like when the plastic guide and t he metal clip are installed correctly. Click here to view an illustration.
