'84x Error' Code on a Lexmark X65x Series Multifunction Printer

What you will see

The printer displays a 'Scanner Failure' message. The message is also accompanied by an 84

x

type numeric error code (where 'x' can be any number); i.e., 840, 841, 842, 843, etc.

The 84x Error indicates that the MFP has detected a communications problem with its scanner. A service call may be required to resolve this issue. Certain rare occurrences, however, such as a power fluctuation or a static discharge in the vicinity of the MFP, can cause a false 84x Error message to display. In such cases, the error is only temporary and can be easily resolved without service.

Recommended solution

Restart the device and check whether error re-appears. If the error clears, proceed with Step 3 to update the printer's firmware with latest level. Otherwise, continue with the next step.

If the error did not clear, first set the printer to Invalid Engine Code status. To do this:

APower off the printer.
BPress and hold the buttons: 3+4+6 (E+N+G).
CPower on the printer and release the buttons after ten seconds.
DOnce restarted, the printer should post 'Invalid Engine Code'.

Download the latest firmware for your printer.

AGo to support.lexmark.com.
BType your printer model in the “Enter Product Name” field and click
OR click on the picture of the correct printer model shown.

Locate the “Downloads” tab.

DSelect the version of the Operating System.
EClick the link available under "Firmware".

After downloading the firmware, proceed with any of the methods below to perform the update.

  • Firmware Flash Methods
    • Embedded Web Server (EWS) Recommended
    • USB utility
    • USB thumb drive
    • FTP
    • Printer File Loader (USB-Macintosh)
  • Information
    • Open a browser and enter the IP address of the printer. Select Settings >Update Firmware.

Note: Updating the firmware should resolve this type of error code. If the error persists, or if you are having difficulties updating the printer's firmware, please contact Lexmark Technical Support.

Solution

Please update the firmware to EC4 or to the latest version. If issue persists, follow the steps in the ‘Recommended actions’ table below.
