An Unusual Buzzing or Humming Noise Can Be Heard on a Lexmark C79x or X79x Series Color Laser Printer

What you will hear

The printer is making a sound best described as a buzzing or humming noise. The noise can occur every time you perform a certain action, such as powering on the printer or printing. It can also occur intermittently.

Possible causes

This noise can be due to any one of the following causes:

  • A piece of paper, or other obstruction, is stuck in the fuser.
  • The fuser units may be installed incorrectly or may be damaged.
  • Improper sequence of latching fuser into position.

Recommended actions

2Open the left-hand access door assembly.

Pull down the two fuser latches on each end to release the fuser, (see red in right-hand image). Grasp the handles on each end of the fuser and pull the fuser out of the printer.

Caution! The fuser is very hot. Be sure the fuser assembly has cooled down by allowing the printer to cool for 15 minutes before removing the fuser.

4Check for any broken or loose parts on the fuser assembly. If damage exists, a service call will likely be required to resolve the issue. No Image
5Look for any jammed paper or other obstructions trapped inside the printer. Examine the fuser assembly for any packing material remaining on it. Remove any you find. Ensure that there are no obstructions inside the printer which would prevent the fuser from seating securely. No Image

Install the fuser back to the printer. Close all doors and covers completely. Power on the printer and try printing again.

Note:
After inserting the fuser assembly, push up the handles (1) and then push up the tab under the right handle (2) as illustrated in the right-hand image.
