Printer crashes when firmware is updated through the front USB port

Issue description

The printer is unable to complete a firmware update because it crashes during the process. It could happen if the update is done through the Front USB port using a USB (Universal Serial Bus) Flash drive (flash drive). The symptoms could be any of the following:

  • Error code 959.xx appears as the printer is rebooted during the firmware update.
  • Blank LCD screen as the printer is rebooted during the firmware update.
  • A clicking sound can be heard indicating that the relay on the printer’s power supply is getting the line voltage, but the printer fails to complete the Power-on self-test (rebooting) process and does not come up to the “Ready” screen.

Perform the “USB Recovery Mode” on the printer by following the steps below:

Note: USB Recovery Mode is applicable only on printers with 2.4" (60.96mm) display panels.

  1. Power off the printer.

  2. Press and hold the buttons 2 + 7 + 8 simultaneously. Click here to view image.

  3. Power on the printer while still holding the buttons down. In about 20 seconds the “USB Recovery” message appear at the top of the screen.

  4. Note: If the LCD screen is blank or the USB Recovery Mode text does not appear, continue to hold down the 2 - 7 - 8 button combination until you hear a beeping sound.

Once you hear the beeping sound, release the buttons and then proceed with the next step. Otherwise, repeat Steps 1 – 3.

  5. At this point, you are able to perform the firmware update. To know how to download and update the firmware, click here.
