Installing a print driver using a script in Windows 10

Overview

This article provides a video for example purposes only. It is intended to familiarize users with script installation in Windows 10.

Note:  Windows 10 drivers may not be immediately available. In the meantime, you may use Windows 8 or 8.1 driver packages for Windows 10 supported printers.

Installing print driver using a script

The following sequence of procedures is summarized in the video below:

  1. Extract the files to a temporary folder.

  2. Accept the License Agreement.

  3. Remove the check mark next to "Launch the Add Printer Wizard after extraction completes".

  4. Locate LMUD1p40 Setup Information file (.inf) via File Explorer > This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Lexmark > Lexmark_Universal_v2_UD1_XL > Drivers > Print > GDI

Note:  You need both the path and setup .inf file name.

  5. Open a Command Prompt (Run as administrator).

  6. If the respective port name is not present, then create a Port, either from Print Server Properties > Ports Tab or using Microsoft provided prnport.vbs script.

Example: How to create a standard Tcp/Ip Port using prnport.vbs script

    cscript c:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnport.vbs -a -r -h

  7. Type C:\Windows\system32>rundll32 printui.dll, PrintUIEntry /if /m "Lexmark Universal v2 XL" /f "C; \Lexmark\Lexmark_Universal_v2_UD1_XL\Drivers|Print\GDI\LMUD1p40.inf /r "<IP_Address>" /Z /q

Note:  The path and .inf Setup Information file value can vary depending on the driver you want to install (e.g., PCL5, PCL XL, or PS).

  8. Open Control Panel and select View devices and printers.

  9. Select Print server properties.

  10. Click the Drivers tab.

  11. Observe Lexmark Universal v2 XL under Installed print drivers.

  12. Select it and click OK.

  13. Verify successful installation by locating the driver with the label Lexmark Universal v2 XL, for example.
