Lexmark X738

Portion of Text or Image Is Stretched and a Clicking Noise Can Be Heard when Scanning from the ADF of a Lexmark X73x

Overview

This issue occurs only when scanning via the Auto Document Feeder (ADF). During the scan process, a clicking noise near the ADF may be heard. Also, the resulting text or image may print out as indicated in the following images.

Scenario 2: No clicking noise, but I still see stretched text and images.

This may be observed when making a color copy from the ADF with the 'Content Mode' set to Photo. This issue may be resolved by updating printer firmware.

Troubleshooting

StepAction
1

Update printer firmware. for more information.

Note:
Verify your printer base code is at LR.FL.P231-0 or later and scanner code at 0000.0062 or later.

2 Ensure that the issue occurs only when scanning through the ADF. To do this, send any two or three pages of test print from your computer. If the issue does not now appear, try to scan while using the Flat bed glass. Check the result.
3

If good images result when both printing from the computer and scanning via the flatbed glass, the issue is to be found in the ADF. Verify whether the ADF's Paper pick rollers are in good condition and try to clean them. Click here to see steps on How to access the ADF pick rollers.

If the pick tires are worn out, please contact Lexmark Technical Support to order a new set or to have them replaced if the printer is still in warranty.

If the Paper pick rollers are in good condition, proceed with the last recommendation in Step 3 below before contacting Lexmark Technical Support for other troubleshooting suggestions.

4

Confirm that you are scanning material printed on a plain copy paper.

Please try to scan a copy paper and see the result. Try this even if the specialty media you are using has worked in the past. This test will eliminate specialty media as partial cause of the issue. The scanner's Paper pick rollers may experience difficulties in pulling specialty papers (i.e., letterhead stock, textured paper, label stock, and card stock) and may lead to the print quality issues discussed here.

For more information on recommended print media, see the chapter entitled 'Understanding paper and specialty media guidelines' in the printer's User's Guide.
