Problem
This article contains instructions on how to set up the printer to print from the front-loading multipurpose tray (also called the Multipurpose Feeder).
Solution
Use the operator panel on the printer to enter the menus.
Locate the Paper Menu and select that menu.
Locate the Paper Source setting and select that.
Find and select MP Feeder or Multipurpose Feeder. The printer should save the new setting, then return to the previous menu.
NOTE: If you cannot find the MP Feeder listed as a choice, please contact Lexmark Technical Support. The printer may require a code update to allow the multifunction tray to be used as a default paper source.
Press the back button until the printer returns to the main 'Ready' screen.
Load paper into the multifunction tray and try printing again. If it is working correctly, the printer should try to feed the paper from the multifunction tray first.
- If the printer continues to print from the paper tray, and you do not get any error messages, please contact Lexmark Technical Support. The printer may require a code update to allow the multifunction tray to be used as a default paper source.
- If you get an error message, especially if you receive a Change Tray message, confirm that the paper size setting on the multifunction tray is set correctly. Unlike the paper trays, where the size of paper is detected automatically, you must set the paper size for the multifunction tray by using the operator panel.
Use the operator panel on the printer to enter the menus.
Locate the Paper Menu and select that menu.
Locate the Paper Source setting and select that.
Find and select MP Feeder or Multipurpose Feeder.
The current paper size setting should be listed. Confirm that the size is set correctly. If it is, simply press the check icon to continue. If the setting is not correct, change it to the correct size and press the check icon to save it.
The current paper type setting should now be listed. Confirm that the setting matches the type of paper mentioned in the Change Tray message. NOTE: In almost all cases, the correct setting will be Plain Paper.
If the setting is correct, simply press the check icon to continue. If the setting is not correct, change it to the correct paper type setting and press the check icon to save it.
After both of these settings are confirmed, press the back button until the printer returns to the main 'Ready' screen.
Try printing again. If the printer still displays an error each time you try to use the multifunction tray, please contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance. IMPORTANT! If you call Lexmark Technical Support, please call from near the printer so the technician on the phone can ask you more information about the error and the settings on the printer.
Additional assistance
If you have questions on any of the steps above, or if this does not correct the issue, please contact Lexmark Technical Support.
When contacting Lexmark for assistance with your printer, please be prepared to describe the problem you are experiencing and any troubleshooting steps already taken. You will also need to know the printer's machine (model) type and serial number (SN).
NOTE: When calling Lexmark Technical Support, please call from near the printer in case the technician on the phone asks you to perform a troubleshooting task on the printer.
More time is required to print the first page because the printer will attempt to pull paper three times from an empty MPF before it registers the MPF as empty and moves on to the next paper source.
The toner cartridge, fuser, and photoconductor unit may experience additional wear because of this extra movement and its continued repetition can shorten the functional life of these parts.
Make sure that the printer is turned on and attached to the workstation via USB.
Download and save the appropriate files into the same directory on your computer. Contact Lexmark Technical Support to obtain these files.
Drag and drop the engine file onto the usbSend.exe icon. NOTE: You will obtain the usbSend.exe file from Lexmark Technical Support.
The printer will begin to update the code. Allow the printer time to update the code, then boot to the 'Ready' screen. IMPORTANT! Do not turn the printer off during this process.
Print a Menu Settings page and confirm that the engine and RIP codes have updated.
Enter the Diagnostic menu by holding the following buttons on power-up.
Longbow H: DOWN + RIGHT
Longbow M: SELECT + LEFT
Bradshaw: 'D' + 'M' (that is, 3 + 6 on the number pad)
Enter the Printer Setup menu and select Engine Settings 2.
Set the Engine Settings 2 numeric value to one of the following values, depending on how you want the 'MPF first' feature to behave.
- 4: (Behaves like Method 1 above.) If the paper source is set to the Multipurpose Feeder, the printer will attempt to feed paper from the MPF first (regardless of any previous tray link from the MPF). Once the MPF tray is empty, the printer then attempts to pick from Tray 1.
- 8: (Behaves like Method 2 above.) The printer will pull paper from the Multipurpose Feeder first, regardless of paper source specified on the printer. Once the MPF tray is empty, the printer then attempts to pick from the paper source specified on the printer.
Exit the Diagnostic menu.
To de-activate this feature, follow the directions below.
Enter the Diagnostic menu.
Enter the Printer Setup menu and select Engine Settings 2.
Set the Engine Settings 2 numeric value back to 0.
Exit the Diagnostic menu.
