Printout appears crooked or skewed

Issue description

The following condition can cause a printout to be uneven or crooked:

  • The paper restraint guides on the paper tray are not set correctly.
  • Note:  This is the most likely cause of the issue.

  • The printer cannot easily feed the type of paper being used.
  • There may be a build-up of paper dust or toner dust on the feed rollers inside the printer.
  • There may be a damaged or worn set of feed rollers in the printer.
  • The paper size is not set correctly.
  • Note:  This applies only when the text and images on the entire page are shifted.

Important! On a letter-size sheet of paper, i.e. 8.5 by 11 inches (21.6 by 27.9 cm), 3 mm of skew from top to bottom is within printer tolerance.




Check printer location for any irregularities or uneven surface. If it is uneven, transfer the printer to another place with an even surface. See if issue persists. If it does, proceed with the next step.


Try reloading the stack of paper into the tray. Make sure the paper is correctly loaded.

IMPORTANT! Make sure the left and right-hand guides lightly touch the sides of the paper (Figure 1). If the guides are loose, the paper can shift in the tray. If the guides are too tight, the paper can bind up as it feeds out of the tray.

Also, do not load the paper above the 'full line' indicator on the tray (Figure 2).


If the paper is loaded into the tray correctly and the skewed print continues, confirm that you are printing on standard plain white copy paper.

If you are using another type of paper, try printing on plain copy paper and compare the result. Please try this even if the print media you are currently using has worked in the past. This test eliminates the print media as a possible cause of the issue.

Certain specialty papers, letterhead stock, label stock, and card stock are harder for the printer to feed. They increase the chances of the pages feeding through crooked, thus skewing the print.


If the skewed print continues, power off the printer. Open the front cover and remove the print cartridge assembly. Examine the inside of the printer as best you can and remove any small pieces of paper you find.

Try cleaning the inside of the printer with a dry cloth and a small can of compressed air to remove any loose paper dust or toner. (Check the following images on how to access and remove the cartridge.)


Look for any damaged or worn-out paper pick rollers. Check the image on the right for its location. Damaged or worn pick rollers will need replacement. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support to arrange service on the printer and for other troubleshooting suggestions.


If you are printing on both sides of the page, try printing on just one side of the page.

IMPORTANT! Make sure you are using the duplex feature when printing on both sides of the page. Re-feeding printed pages through the printer can cause paper feed issues to occur.

If the skew issue occurs when you print on only one side of the page, then one of the main feed rollers in the printer will likely need to be replaced. To arrange service on the printer, please contact Lexmark Technical Support.

If single-sided pages appear fine, there may be an issue with one of the feed rollers on the duplex feature. This will also require service on the duplex assembly.
